Just as CPR helps someone respond to a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) helps everyday people support someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis. 💙

In our 8-hour MHFA certification course, participants learn to:
• Recognize risk factors and warning signs, including depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use
• Use a 5-step action plan to connect someone with professional help
• Reduce stigma in their communities
• Find the right resources for support and recovery

Studies show people trained in MHFA feel more confident helping others and are more likely to encourage someone to seek professional help.

Courses are open to the community, or we can bring one to your group, virtually or in person. Interested? Email [email protected] or learn more here: https://www.abetterwayinc.net/training-program-mhfa

🎃 Five Trick-or-Treat Tips 🎃

👻 Stay visible. Add reflective tape or glow sticks to costumes and bags.

🎭 Skip the mask. Face paint (tested on a small patch of skin first) won’t block vision like a mask can.

🏠 Visit well-lit homes. Stick to porches with lights on, and never go inside a home unless you’re with a trusted adult.

🍬 Check the candy. Look over treats before anyone digs in, set aside anything unwrapped, and watch for allergens.

📱 Make a plan. Agree on a route and a meeting spot, and make sure older kids have a charged phone.

Wishing you a safe & happy Halloween 🧡

Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. 💛

When families are stretched thin, everything gets harder: keeping kids healthy, staying connected, getting the support they need. No parent should have to face that alone.

At A Better Way, our therapists, family partners, and parent advocates work alongside Bay Area families to strengthen homes, support kids’ mental health, and build brighter futures. Because families thrive when they have people in their corner.

🎉 Congratulations to Rocio Medina on 10 years at A Better Way! 🎉

Last month, ABW staff gathered on Teams to celebrate a decade of dedication from Rocio, Program Director of our Solano School-Based Mental Health Program.

Rocio joined ABW as a 0-5 clinician, supporting our youngest clients and their families. After just one year, she stepped into a supervisory role, and at the end of 2019, she became Program Director of Solano School-Based Mental Health. Along the way, she has led with heart, compassion, and a deep commitment to the children, families, and colleagues she serves.

Rocio shared: "Over the course of my 10 years at ABW, I have had the great pleasure and privilege to work with amazing families, colleagues, supervisors, directors, clinicians, and various other team members that have supported my growth and want to continue to work here."

Rocio, thank you for 10 years of leadership and heart. We're so grateful to have you on our team! 💛

This October, A Better Way stands . 💜

Behind every statistic is a family, and often a child who saw, heard, or felt the effects of violence at home. With the right support, children can heal, and parents can rebuild.

Our therapists, Family Partners, and care teams provide trauma-informed support to children, youth, and families affected by violence and instability, helping families build the safe, stable, and loving relationships every child deserves.

If you or someone you know needs help:

Introducing Enhanced Care Management (ECM) at A Better Way. 💛

ECM gives your family one Lead Care Manager who gets to know your situation, keeps your providers talking to each other, and meets you wherever is easiest: home, school, a shelter, the clinic, or a park.

It's a Medi-Cal benefit, so there's no added cost. You keep your own doctors, your other benefits stay the same, and you can stop at any time.

ECM may be a good fit if someone in your household is facing housing instability, frequent ER visits, a mental health or substance use challenge, a return home from a hospital or custody, or involvement with child welfare or foster care (up to age 26).

Serving Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, and Solano counties.

Today is Youth Mental Health Day. Here are five simple but powerful ways to support the young people in your life:

1. Listen without trying to fix. Sometimes kids need to feel heard more than they need solutions. Put down your phone, make eye contact, and just be present.

2. Normalize talking about feelings. The more openly families talk about emotions (including hard ones) the easier it becomes for kids to ask for help when they need it.

3. Watch for changes in behavior. Withdrawal, irritability, changes in sleep or appetite — these can be early signs that a young person is struggling. Trust your instincts.

4. Build in downtime. Kids are overscheduled and overstimulated. Unstructured time to play, rest, and just be a kid is genuinely protective for mental health.

5. Seek support early. You don't have to wait until things reach a crisis point. Connecting a child or teen with mental health support sooner rather than later makes a real difference.

💚 At A Better Way, supporting the mental health of children and youth is at the heart of everything we do.
