Human dignity – We are conscious of and actively support the basic right of every human being to have respect and to have their basic needs met. Health/Healing – We promote the wisdom of mind and body soundness that flows from meeting spiritual, emotional, and physical needs through self-awareness and preventive discipline. This includes an understanding that knowledge of self allows for the maintenance of internal balance that promotes positive feelings. Community - We foster depth and commitment as we engage people individually and in groups so that both independent creativity and interdependent cooperation are maximized. Expressiveness/Joy – We create spaces that allow people and communities to express self openly engendering cooperation and stimulating thoughts and imaginations. Through these methods, we encourage open expression of ideas and opinions to bring conflicts into the open and resolve disagreements collaboratively. Efficiency/Planning – We think about and design systems, acts, and purposes in an efficient manner before implementing them. Accountability/Ethics – We make values and beliefs explicit as a basis for honest and ethical behavior. We encourage others to be aware of their values as well as the alignment (or misalignment) between community values and organizational policies. 💧 Black Breastfeeding Week may be seven days. Supporting Black mothers is a 365-day commitment.

As we close out Black Breastfeeding Week, we’re thinking about the everyday practices, resources, and relationships that can support mothers throughout pregnancy, postpartum, breastfeeding, and beyond.

And sometimes support starts with something as simple as a glass of water. 💧🍉

Staying hydrated is important for overall health, and during breastfeeding, drinking enough fluids helps mothers meet their bodies’ increased hydration needs. Our Watermelon Thyme Spa Water is a refreshing way to make reaching for water a little more flavorful and enjoyable.

🍉 Fresh watermelon
🌿 Fresh thyme
💧 Cold water
🧊 A little ice, if you like

But hydration is only one piece of the village.

Supporting Black mothers also looks like culturally affirming care, access to Black midwives and doulas, lactation support, informed feeding choices, supportive partners and families, and spaces where mothers can speak openly about their experiences.

That’s part of why S.T.E.P. — Sisters Together Empowering Peers matters to us. Our Motherhood Circles create space to connect, exchange resources, share our stories, and grow alongside one another.

And there are local resources throughout the Bay Area. Below is one of our partnerships in Berkeley:

📍 Berkeley: Berkeley WIC offers breastfeeding/chestfeeding education, counseling, classes, and breast-pump support.

Black Breastfeeding Week may be ending, but the care, conversations, resources, and village must continue.

💬 Mamas: What helped you stay nourished and hydrated during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or postpartum? Share your tips below—we may help another mother along her journey.

Breastfeeding may be natural—but that doesn’t mean every breastfeeding journey comes naturally. 🤎

As we reflect on Black Breastfeeding Week and the connections made during the ROSE & ROBE 15th Anniversary Breastfeeding & Birth Justice Summit, we’re carrying home an important reminder: none of us should have to navigate pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, or parenthood alone.
We connected with people doing powerful work alongside Black mothers, babies, fathers, partners, midwives, doulas, lactation professionals, birth workers, storytellers, and families. We exchanged knowledge, shared experiences, strengthened relationships, and returned home even more committed to connecting our community with the people and resources that can support their journeys.

And among those resources, we want to especially uplift Black midwives. 🤎

Black midwives can be an invaluable source of continuous, culturally responsive care throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and the breastfeeding journey. Their work reminds us that breastfeeding support doesn’t have to begin after a baby is born—it can be part of a continuum of care that prepares, educates, advocates for, and supports families along the way.

Because questions about latch, milk supply, pumping, returning to work, pain—or simply wondering, “Am I doing this right?”—deserve compassionate answers and knowledgeable support.

One of our biggest reminders is that building relationships matters. Sharing resources matters. Preserving our stories matters. And creating villages is the only way to true liberation.

Making sure that we are telling our stories is a huge way to advocate.

so in honor of telling our own stories follow and learn more about Rawn Hairston so we can get a much needed Part II

Black Breastfeeding Week may be coming to a close, and the summit may have ended, but our commitment to black mothers, babies, and families continues.

In closing:

Healthy Black Families Inc. is proud to be in New Orleans for the ROSE & ROBE 15th Anniversary Breastfeeding & Birth Justice Summit: “The 92%: Breastfeeding, Power & Birth Justice.”

This isn't just a conference.

It is a gathering of Black lactation support providers, birth workers, parents, fathers, elders, clinicians, researchers, policymakers, community partners and advocates coming together to examine breastfeeding, birth, power and justice—and to build solutions.

For us, being in this space during Black Breastfeeding Week matters and is an honor.

Our work has long affirmed that Black mothers and families deserve culturally grounded support, informed choices, community and systems that allow them to thrive.

We're excited to learn, listen, connect and bring knowledge back to our community. 🤎

🤎 It’s Black Breastfeeding Week!

This year’s theme, “We All We Got: 14 Years of Community, Care, and Collective Power,” reminds us that breastfeeding has never existed in isolation. Behind so many Black mothers are mothers, aunties, grandmothers, partners, friends, doulas and community members who helped them navigate feeding, parenting and becoming.

So this week, we want to hear from YOU.

💬 Who taught you about breastfeeding?

Was it your mother? Grandmother? Auntie? Sister? A lactation professional? Or were you the first person in your family to begin that conversation?

Our stories are part of our history—and when we tell them ourselves, we make sure we are the ones writing her-story.

IMAGINE WHAT’S POSSIBLE. ✨

Healthy Black Families, Inc. is grateful to be present for today’s opening plenary conversation, “Democracy for a Good Life: The Economic Path to a Thriving Democracy,” facilitated by Angela Glover Blackwell.

Today’s theme is IMAGINE—and the conversation is challenging us to think beyond simply repairing policies and toward redesigning the systems that shape our lives.

We know the stories of our nation’s “founding fathers,” but today we were invited to consider a different question: Who is our mother? What would it mean to approach this moment as a great maternity test—one that asks how we nurture, protect and build a nation where everyone has the opportunity to thrive?

Because what we are facing is more than a policy challenge. It is a design challenge.

We are being called to become architects, builders and modern-day founders—to imagine new possibilities and then do the collective work necessary to bring them into being.

The question we’re carrying with us is:

“How do we transform this into a society that works for all?”

At Healthy Black Families, this question is deeply connected to why we do what we do. We are grateful to be in spaces where imagination is paired with action, where community voices help shape solutions, and where equity isn't simply something we discuss—it is something we work together to build.

We’re listening. We’re learning. We’re imagining. And most importantly, we’re continuing the work. 🤎
