Happy Juneteenth! But what does it celebrate?
Not all states ended slavery, even after the civil war. Months later, the last holdout in Galveston, Texas, was liberated by US troops on this day in 1865. Juneteenth was first observed one year later in 1866 to mark the actual day of freedom.
