Now that summer break is here, many kids are trading classroom desks for couches, video games, tablets, and endless screen time. While a little relaxation is important, staying physically active during the summer months plays a HUGE role in your child’s health, growth, posture, mood, sleep, and overall development.

At Family Wellness, we believe movement is medicine, especially for growing bodies.

During the school year, children usually have some level of built-in movement through PE classes, recess, sports, walking between classes, and after-school activities. Once summer begins, many kids become significantly less active without realizing it.

Regular physical activity helps children:

- Build strong muscles and healthy joints
- Improve posture and spinal alignment
- Support healthy growth and development
- Strengthen coordination and balance
- Boost immune system function
- Improve focus and mental health
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Sleep better at night
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Increase confidence and social interaction

Most importantly, active kids tend to become healthier active adults.

FUN WAYS TO KEEP YOUR KIDS ACTIVE THIS SUMMER:

Encourage your kids to:
🚴 Ride bikes
🏊 Swim
⚽ Play sports
πŸ₯Ύ Go hiking
πŸ›Ή Skateboard or rollerblade
🀸 Jump on trampolines
🐢 Walk the dog
🎾 Play tennis or pickleball
🌞 Visit parks and playgrounds
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Have family walks after dinner
πŸ’¦ Run through sprinklers or play outdoor games

Even simple movement throughout the day makes a difference!

"How often should I get adjusted?"

It's one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is: it depends.

Just as no two people have the same health history, lifestyle, stress load, or physical demands, no two bodies respond exactly the same way to care.

Some people are working through an active issue and may benefit from more frequent visits initially. Others are maintaining progress, supporting an active lifestyle, or simply seeking to help their bodies function at their best and may require less frequent care.

One of the things we pay attention to is how well your body adapts and holds changes over time. Does tension quickly return? Are old patterns resurfacing? Or is your body maintaining mobility, balance, and function between visits?

The goal isn't to keep you coming in as often as possible. The goal is to help your body move well, adapt well, and function well.

Your care plan should be as individual as you are.

From babies learning to roll and crawl, to kids running and playing, to adults managing busy schedules and physical stress, movement plays a major role in how the body grows, develops, and functions.

At Family Wellness Chiropractic, we believe healthy movement matters at every age.

Many people are surprised to learn how important movement is even during infancy, and early milestones all play important roles in physical and neurological development.

As chiropractors, we look at how the body is moving and functioning as a whole. When joints move well and the nervous system is communicating effectively, children are often better equipped to explore their environment, develop movement skills, and meet developmental milestones with confidence.

While chiropractic care isn't about forcing development or "fixing" milestones, it can help support optimal function by addressing areas of tension, restriction, or imbalance that may impact comfort and movement.

Whether it's a baby learning to roll, a child navigating growth and activity, or an adult striving to stay active and healthy, our goal is to support the body's ability to move, adapt, and function at its best.

Healthy movement habits developed early can positively impact health for years to come.

Peak-a-boo! We see YOU.

Yes, clients and their kiddos are always welcome, even if it's just to check in on what's new in the playhouse.

If you know, you know. πŸ™Œ

School's about to let out. The screen time is about to go up.

We're not here to lecture - we're here to help your kids' necks and spines survive it.

A few things that actually work:

✦ Mix up the position. Belly, side, up high, down low - even upside down on the couch during commercial breaks. The real problem isn't the screen, it's the frozen posture.

✦ Break up the stretches. It's not about cutting screens out. It's about interrupting them before "text neck" becomes the summer souvenir.

✦ Move in every direction. Monkey bars, back bends, cobra stretches, climbing, crawling, stone hopping - anything that asks the spine and brain to work in three dimensions instead of folded forward at a tablet.

Birmingham summers are long, hot, and built for time inside on a screen. Make a little room for the other stuff, too!
