New research from Joslin Diabetes Center highlights a breakthrough in how the body regulates metabolism.

In a study published in Nature Metabolism, scientists identified a molecular “switch” that controls whether brown fat burns calories or stays inactive. The team found that hormonal signals can rapidly reshape the 3D structure of DNA in brown fat cells—activating key metabolic genes—with the protein H2A.Z playing a central role.

Importantly, this mechanism was also confirmed in human cells and linked to genetic risk for obesity and metabolic disease.

A promising step toward new therapies targeting one of the body’s natural calorie-burning systems. Read more about it, here: https://joslin.org/news-stories/all-news-stories/news/2026/04/study-uncovers-3d-dna-switch-in-brown-fat

Joslin researchers identify a 3D DNA switch that controls brown fat’s calorie‑burning power, opening new paths to fight obesity and diabetes.

This May, we are proud to celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month, honoring the enduring contributions of Jewish Americans to our society and to Beth Israel Lahey Health.

Our organization’s history is deeply connected to the Boston Jewish community, whose vision and leadership founded Beth Israel Hospital more than a century ago. They established a place guided by compassion and innovation—principles that continue to shape our mission and work today.

This May, Beth Israel Lahey Health recognizes Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI) by reflecting on the histories, cultures, and shared experiences that have helped strengthen communities across generations. AAPI is an umbrella term that spans 75 countries and regions from the entire Asian continent, including East, Southeast and South Asia, the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia, and Native Hawaiians.

When traditions, perspectives, and voices come together, they create lasting impact. This month highlights the power of unity and the ways communities grow stronger through connection, understanding, and shared purpose.
