Behind every wheelchair is a child who can now move through the world differently. Behind every child is a system that made it possible.
This , we are sharing our progress: 300 children fitted with a wheelchair through CHAI's work with governments in Ethiopia, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone. By the end of August, we expect to more than double that number.
But the story isn't the wheelchair. It's what's underneath:
Assistive products are now a permanent line item in national health supply chains. Providers have been trained to assess, fit, and follow up with each child. And in Rwanda, local governments are covering the cost of transport to and from health facilities, so that getting to a fitting appointment isn't the barrier between a child and a wheelchair.
This is what it looks like when governments own the pathway from screening to provision, and AT moves from one-off support to routine public health care.
Full program results follow in September. In Nairobi? Come meet with us this week at the inABLE Inclusive Africa and IAPB IN SIGHT Conferences taking place in the city.
