Teena Evert, LMFT Midlife Marriage Specialist in Boulder. Couples therapy & marriage intensives. Hi, I'm Teena. My passion is to help people in their primary relationships.

Relationships can be tough, often leaving people suffering from a lack of understanding about what’s needed for change. Blaming partners for our pain is common, but we all contribute to our relationship dynamics. Addressing these patterns requires courage and vulnerability, leading to relief, confidence, happiness, humor, and ease in our important relationships. I personally understand these struggles, having overcome chronic heartbreak and emotional abuse, transforming pain, hurt, and confusion into a thriving partnership. For couples, I help them work together to develop a secure-functioning partnership, which comes with various health benefits. For individuals who have unresolved attachment wounds resulting in chronically failed adult relationships, I guide them in nurturing their self-relationship. This journey is deeply spiritual, helping them heal and recover from past core wounds, ultimately preparing them to attract the future partnership they desire.

I sat down with VoyageDenver to talk about seventeen years of working with couples — why I only see couples, why I don't offer a quick version of this work, and what actually changes things for two people who've been stuck for a long time.

One line from the piece I keep coming back to: most couples don't have a communication problem. They have a threat-response problem that shows up as a communication problem.

After 17 years of sitting with couples, here’s what I believe most:

Connection isn’t a fixed trait some couples have and others don’t. It’s a practice — one any two willing people can return to, at any age, from almost any distance.

I’ve watched partners who felt like strangers find their way back to real warmth. Not by becoming different people, but by learning to turn toward each other again.

If you’re ready to begin that, I’d be honored to help. A consultation is the first step.

We tend to think the defining years of a marriage are the early ones — the wedding, the babies, the building.

But for many couples, the most important chapter is the one that comes after: when the striving quiets, and you finally have the time, clarity, and freedom to choose each other on purpose.

The first half of your marriage was about building a life. The second half can be about truly living it — together.

That chapter is still unwritten. And it can be the best one.

You don’t have to be in crisis to see a couples therapist.

Some of the most meaningful work I do is with couples who aren’t in crisis at all — they’re just tired of the distance, and unwilling to keep drifting. They come not to rescue the relationship, but to make a good one deeper.

Waiting until things feel unbearable only makes the work harder. You’re allowed to come before then.

If something has felt off, that’s reason enough. Let’s talk.

If you’ve been having the same fight for years, I promise it’s not really about the dishes.

Underneath most recurring arguments is a deeper question that never quite gets answered: Do I matter to you? Can I count on you? Am I safe here?

Couples get stuck not because the problem is unsolvable, but because they keep arguing about the surface while the real question goes unheard.

Name the deeper question, and the fight starts to change.

When the house gets quieter, the distance gets louder.
For a lot of couples, the “roommate” feeling comes into focus in midlife — when the kids leave or careers steady, and the noise that filled the years finally dies down. In the quiet, you notice what the busyness had been covering.

It can be disorienting. It can also be an opening — a chance to ask, on purpose, who do we want to be together now?

If you’re ready to find your way back to each other, let’s talk. A consultation is the first step.

Here’s the hopeful truth about drifting apart:

If disconnection built slowly — through a thousand small, unnoticed moments — then reconnection can be built the same way.

Not with grand gestures. With small ones. The question actually asked. The touch on the way past. The turning toward each other, again and again.

The warmth you’re missing isn’t gone. It’s waiting to be tended.

If your marriage has started to feel more like a roommate arrangement — polite, cooperative, but not close — here’s what I want you to know.

It almost never means you’ve fallen out of love.

More often, it means the connection stopped being tended. Life got loud, and the small moments that keep you close got crowded out. That’s not the end of love — it’s a signal that something’s been waiting for your attention.

And attention is something you can choose to give again.

People sometimes assume that by midlife, a couple’s patterns are set — that if things have been hard for years, that’s just how it will be.

I’ve seen the opposite, again and again.

Midlife couples often do the deepest work I witness. They have history, self-awareness, and a clear sense of what matters now. When they decide to turn toward each other, change doesn’t just happen — it lasts.

It’s not too late. In many ways, this is the moment you’ve been preparing for.

Connection isn’t usually rebuilt in grand gestures. It’s rebuilt in small moments most couples overlook.

The question asked — and actually answered. The hand on the shoulder on the way past. The “how are you, really?” that means it.

Researchers call these bids for connection: small invitations to be seen. Strong couples don’t make grander ones. They just notice and answer each other’s more often.

The repair you’re looking for may be smaller, and closer, than you think.
