We are honored to host Dr. Alisa Sumkin, DO, for our upcoming Breast Cancer Lunch & Learn!

Dr. Sumkin is a board-certified diagnostic radiologist at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. A specialist in advanced breast imaging—including 3D mammography, MRI, and ultrasound—she is deeply committed to early detection and patient-centered care.

UPMC Trinity is celebrating a significant milestone in surgical innovation as Dr. Samuel Licata, a board-certified general surgeon and pioneer of robotic surgery, recently completed his 1,500th robotic-assisted surgical procedure.

Over the years, Dr. Licata has used robotic technology to perform a wide range of procedures, including hernia repairs, colon resections, gallbladder surgery, gastric surgery, and splenectomies. The robotic surgery program at UPMC Trinity has expanded to support multiple specialties, including general surgery, gynecology, and urology.

Despite the sophisticated technology, Dr. Licata emphasizes that robotic surgery does not replace the personal connection between physician and patient.

“The robot is simply another tool,” he said. “The compassion, communication, and trust that patients expect from their surgeon remain exactly the same.”

Thirteen years after helping launch the program, Dr. Licata’s 1,500th robotic surgery serves as a milestone not only for his career, but also for the continued growth of advanced surgical care at UPMC Trinity.

If you've had surgery, you've probably heard that you need to stop eating or drinking at a certain point before your surgery.

But do you know why? 🤔

Fasting before surgery reduces the risk of pulmonary aspiration, which happens when stomach contents end up in the airway. It can cause life-threatening complications.

Anesthesia affects the body's natural ability to protect the airway, making pulmonary aspiration more likely. But fasting reduces stomach contents and stomach acid levels, lowering your risk of pulmonary aspiration.

It's important to always follow your care team's instructions on when to stop eating and drinking before surgery. Not following instructions could put you at risk and cause your surgical team to delay your procedure.
