🛴 Electric Scooter Safety 🛴

As electric scooters become more common in our community, we would like to share some important safety information. Significant risks exist when sharing the roadway with full-size vehicles. Electric scooters are small, offer no protection in a crash, and can be difficult for drivers to see. Even a low-speed collision with a passenger vehicle can result in life-threatening or fatal injuries for a scooter rider.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children under 16 should not operate electric scooters. These devices can reach high speeds and require strong judgment and awareness.

Children under 16 are at higher risk of injury because they may:
🪖 Not consistently wear a properly fitted helmet
🚗 Struggle to judge vehicle speed and distance
⚠️ React more slowly to unexpected hazards like vehicles backing out or uneven pavement
📱 Be more easily distracted while riding

Parents: If your teen is operating an electric scooter, make sure they understand the rules of the road. They should know how to recognize traffic signs, yield appropriately, ride predictably, and stay alert at all times. Set clear expectations for where they can ride and always require a helmet.

🚗 For Everyone
• Drivers: Watch closely for scooter riders, especially at driveways and intersections
• Parents: Talk with your children about safe riding rules before they ride
• Everyone: A little awareness and patience can prevent serious injuries

At our Emergency Department, we want every child to enjoy their summer and return home safely. A quick conversation about scooter safety today can prevent a serious injury tomorrow.
