You've probably heard that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. But what does that actually mean for YOUR risk? 🩷

Family history can be complicated. We all have a family history of something, but that doesn't necessarily mean we're at higher risk for developing it.

In fact, most women are considered to be at average risk for breast cancer. That means a lifetime risk of approximately 12–13%, or about 1 in 8 women. 📊

Dr. Susan Boolbol, our breast surgical oncologist, explains what average risk really means and why understanding your personal risk is an important part of breast health.

Sometimes, the biggest step toward better health is making it easier to take the first one. 💗

For many women, finding the time, resources or opportunity to schedule a mammogram isn't always easy. But access to preventive care shouldn't be what stands between someone and their health.

That's why Putnam Hospital partnered with the Cancer Services Program of the Hudson Valley to help make breast cancer screenings more accessible to our community.

Together, we provided breast screenings and mammograms to 14 eligible community members, helping remove barriers to preventive care and making it easier to prioritize their health.

And while Breast Cancer Awareness Month gives us an important reason to talk about screenings, the need for early detection doesn't end when October does.

If you've been putting off your mammogram, consider this your reminder to make that appointment. Your health is worth making time for. 🩺✨

You were just checking the time. Now you're 20 videos deep, reading comments from strangers and can't remember why you picked up your phone in the first place. 📱😅

Sound familiar?

And have you ever noticed yourself feeling a little... off afterward? Maybe more anxious, overwhelmed or mentally drained than you were before you started scrolling?

Think about it. You're bouncing between stressful headlines, funny videos, strangers' opinions and endless notifications, all while your brain is anticipating the next interesting thing.

There's actually some science behind why it's so hard to put our phones down. Research has also found links between problematic smartphone use and symptoms of anxiety, depression and poor sleep, particularly among young people.

We realize we're talking about spending less time on social media while you're scrolling through it. The irony isn't lost on us! But that's exactly why we think it's worth having this conversation. Because the more you understand how your scrolling habits can affect your health, the easier it is to make healthier choices.

👉 So, swipe through for the science, the research and a few practical ways to unplug.

Then try our challenge: Put your phone down for 15 minutes today. No scrolling, no checking notifications, no "just one more video." 💜

You inherited your mom’s eyes, your dad’s smile and maybe even your grandma’s stubborn streak. But what about the things you *can't* see? 🧬💗

Genetic testing can be a powerful tool in understanding your cancer risk. Knowing you carry an inherited genetic mutation may open the door to earlier screenings, more personalized care and opportunities to reduce your risk.

It doesn't stop with you, either. If you carry an inherited mutation linked to breast cancer, each of your first-degree relatives (parents, siblings and children) has a 50% chance of carrying that same mutation.

This , Dr. Susan Boolbol is sharing why understanding inherited risk matters and why more women should feel empowered to ask one simple question:

"Should I consider genetic testing?"

Ask for yourself. Ask for your daughters, sisters, mothers and grandmothers. Because advocating for your health could make a difference for generations.

Every October 15, the Nesheiwat family honors Najah's birthday by giving back to the hospital that cared for her. 🕊️

In 2010, her husband, Jamal, wanted to thank the Putnam Hospital team for the compassionate care Najah received. What started as one family's expression of gratitude has grown into a 16-year tradition of giving back to our community.

And this year, that generosity is making a difference in emergency care. 🚑

Putnam Hospital's Emergency Department is the recipient of the 2026 Najah Nesheiwat Care Fund Award! The funding will support additional stroke training for our team, helping strengthen the care patients receive when every second counts.

To the Nesheiwat and Youssef families, thank you for 16 years of showing up for our hospital, our caregivers and our community. Your family's generosity continues to make a difference in the lives of people you've never even met.

"Congratulations to the 2026 recipient and thank you, Putnam Hospital for all that you do. I know our parents would be proud to see their legacy of gratitude continue in this special way—honoring those who make a difference in the lives of others," Nesheiwat's daughter, Renee Youssef, said.
