Sacred Fire Carrollton

Sacred Fire Carrollton Discover what's been forgotten: The ageless wisdom of the heart.

The Sacred Fire Community is a global network of people bringing a sense of the sacred back into our world. Operating locally, through gatherings in the presence of Fire, we learn, grow, and open to the Great Mystery in which we all participate. The element of Fire is the essence of our hearts, the source of spiritual connection and compassion. Acknowledged throughout humanity's history, Fire hold

s our deepest knowing and wisdom, and awakens our personal relationship with the Divine. We welcome people of all spiritual affiliations and those who do not identify with any particular tradition.

None of us were able to make it 'across the pond' this year, but Lawrence was fortunate to attend the last two Fire Speaks events in that region of the world. This is a wonderful effort to raised funds for next year's Fire Speaks in the U.K.– an amazing experience of wisdom, tradition, and transformation.

One of the great conceits of the modern world is that we are very smart and earlier peoples were rather child-like or “primitive.”

And yet, when you really step back from that assumption and think of how real the possibility of death was in pre-historic times, this seems ludicrous. In fact, as many of our elders point out, we nowadays simply have a lot “insulation”: technologies and other forms of artifice that make many stupid, unsustainable ideas seem like they work…for a while at least.

Pre-historic peoples did not have such luxuries. For survival’s sake, they had to be astute observers of the natural world around them. Their survival also depended on a deep level of inter-dependence. If they did foolish stuff, they died very quickly.

The corrollary that their spirituality was just “make believe” is also ridiculous. They only did stuff that worked!

The video below illustrates the brilliance of pre-historic peoples and the importance of fire at the center of it all.

Yes, there is great irony here in that the video is AI-generated and has some distracting AI 'hallucinations' that make some of the tools look suspiciously modern–not to mention the features of the people! The title is way too melodramatic. But the story is one that is increasingly documented by anthropology.

Mind you, this view of what life might have looked like 40,000 years ago in northern Europe is largely scientific and materialistic in its assumptions. There is nothing about Fire as a spiritual presence in all life that is about heart, connection, and emotional expression—although it does veer a bit into that direction as it talks about the important ‘social glue’ that fire afforded. If the video could include the spiritual aspects of Fire…well, it would be a blockbuster! Or at least catch like wildfire!

Let us know what you think of this. And many thanks to our Firekeeper teacher, don David Wiley–who first brought this video to our attention!

Why are we drawn to fire? Science takes one approach—characterized by the first part of this article. And although I respect science as a legitimate and often effective way of seeing the world, the explanation here seems convoluted and overly complex. (Where is Occam’s Razor when you need it?!) But the second part, explaining the benefits of staring at a fire…well, I think perhaps closer to a much older view of what fire (Fire) does for us. See what you think:

It's not just cozy vibes. We're hardwired to stare at flames.

As Grandfather Fire likes to point out, every new human invention creates two new problems or “externalities” in the words of the economists. Then other inventions come along to solve those unintended effecst and it creates four new problems. And so you get an exponential growth in problems and complexity until you get…well, a world very much like the one we inhabit!

It’s not that any given technology is not without its benefits (true since the earliest of hominins picked up the first rock to use as a tool perhaps over 3 million years ago). But in the absence of wisdom in how to use the tool, you get exponentially increasing destruction and suffering—not only for humans, but also the ‘other than human’ beings with which we share this world.

I (Lawrence) sometimes joke that ‘A.I.’ stands for Accelerated Insanity. Again, it can be helpful. Why, I even use it myself to help with editing. But the naive faith in the technology—that’s a problem of exponentially growing proportions!

One of the more sober views I’ve seen on the promise of A.I. as well as how it is more likely to be disruptive. See:

Congratulations. You’re irreplaceable.

In honor of Sylvia Edwards–the fiery Scottish lass who is our Director of Firekeeping–this is a thoughtful and entertaining blog on ‘Brand Scotland.’ I propose a whiskey toast to Sylvia and ‘Brand Scotland (and the ‘fire water’ that is part of its charm)!

The origin story for Sacred Fire (the international organization that supports our local Carrollton fires) begins with our teacher and friend, Don David Wiley. He also happens to be the husband of local Firekeeper Sherry Boatright and so many of you have actually met David around the fire!

This is the astounding story of how David went from being a trade consultant in Mexico to discovering that he had a calling to be a ‘mara’akame’ or healer and ritual leader on the Wirárika (Huichol) path. That was dramatic enough, but he was called to the path by none other than the Spirit of Fire (known as ‘Tatewarí’ or ‘Our Grandfather Fire to the Wirárika), who also recruited David to be a ‘Axihuatakame’ (Wirárika for ‘god speaker man). Thus Sacred Fire was born!

Humans–and early human-like ancestors–have engaged fire for a very long time. New evidence suggests this might have happened as early as 1.8 million years ago or twice as long ago as previously thought. See:

In Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa, burned bones were found in a dirt layer associated with Homo erectus. The inhabitants probably hadn't mastered fire-making, but researchers say they may have moved and maintained flames from a natural fire

Modern life often favors convenience over well being. A recent confirmation of this in a long-term study of the way that remote work contributes to isolation and negatively impacts mental health. See:

How does remote work affect isolation and mental health? We drew on five nationally representative surveys of American workers (N = 588,322) conducted from 2011 to 2024, omitting the peak pandemic years of 2020–2021. Our difference-in-differences ...
