Pretty awesome to see one of our Engage young adults working in a paid student ambassador position at Southwest Technical College, just a few blocks from Engage. We love watching young adults find their lane through programs like welding, auto mechanics, coding, EMT, and other hands-on career paths.

The job market continues to reward real-world technical skills, and Southwest Tech gives Engage young adults the chance to earn certifications that can translate directly into careers. It is another way our young adults can build confidence, independence, and momentum for what comes next.

This is one of our favorite times of year at Engage. Summer is turning into fall, Cedar City is filling back up with SUU students, and 88% of Engage young adults are enrolled at Southern Utah University, Southwest Technical College, or finishing high school.

There is something pretty great about watching Engage young adults head out the door to class, build their routines, meet new people, and keep moving toward what’s next. School creates momentum, independence, and real-life anchors, and we love seeing it happen.

Our quarterly Engage team off-site gave us time to step away from the daily work, strengthen team unity, and make sure we remain aligned in how we support our young adults. We focused on building continuous improvement into our culture and deepened our understanding of neurodivergent complexity.

We also had a blast doing pottery at Shape Theory, a local studio owned and operated by professors from Southern Utah University’s Art Department. A good day of learning, connection, creativity, and plenty of imperfect pottery.

Why can “just treat the depression” fail in neurodivergent young adults?

Two young adults may both look avoidant, unmotivated, or withdrawn, but the mechanisms driving that behavior may be very different. Reduced activity might reflect depression, anxiety, executive functioning barriers, sensory overload, autistic burnout, depleted capacity, or several of these interacting at once. The better clinical question is not simply, “How do we increase activity?” It is, “Why has activity decreased, and what is preventing successful engagement?”

In neurodivergent complexity, treatment needs to be mechanism-matched, not simply symptom-matched. Behavioral activation and exposure can absolutely be appropriate, but only when we accurately identify the function of avoidance, calibrate demands to current capacity, and then progressively build capacity. Otherwise, we risk confusing treatment of pathological avoidance with repeatedly asking someone to tolerate a genuine sensory, cognitive, or social-environmental mismatch.

This is why we increasingly think in terms of a transactional model rather than an additive one: not autism + depression + anxiety as separate problems, but a self-reinforcing neurodevelopmental-clinical system in which each factor can amplify the others.

College Town Advantage!!

The college town advantage matters. With Southern Utah University and Southwest Technical College right here in Cedar City, Engage young adults have real opportunities to explore college, technical training, certifications, jobs, internships, and new directions while still having support around them.

Cedar City also gives young adults something treatment alone cannot: a real community to practice adulthood in. They can go to class, work, build friendships, attend events, try new activities, and begin creating a life that feels like their own.

Nothing beats a good gym day with your people.

At Engage, young adults head to Retro Fitness with life coaches and case managers to lift, move, push themselves, and build healthy routines together. It is not just about getting stronger. It is about having people beside you who encourage you, challenge you, and make the whole thing more fun.

Fitness builds confidence, consistency, and resilience. It also builds connection, and that matters just as much.

Connection. Independence. Health. And sometimes, a Renaissance fair.

Cedar City is a great place to practice being a young adult. It has the energy of a college town, the creativity of a festival city, and easy access to the outdoors. For Engage young adults, that means real opportunities to try new things, meet people, go to school, work, volunteer, explore, and build confidence in everyday life.

From SUU and Southwest Tech to local jobs, trails, events, concerts, and festivals, Cedar City gives young adults a real community to grow in.

Gambling addiction may be one of the most overlooked issues affecting young adults today.

Engage therapist Patrick Dotson, L.C.S.W., recently completed specialized training in gambling disorder within today’s digital landscape. Engage is strengthening its ability to help young adults recognize harmful patterns, regain control, rebuild trust, and develop healthier ways to manage stress, risk, and emotion.

Gambling-style apps are constantly in front of young adults and often presented as entertainment, competition, or an easy way to make money.

Gambling has become so normalized, many people do not recognize the problem until real damage has occurred. It can begin to affect anxiety, mood, sleep, finances, relationships, school, work, and progress toward independence.

Gambling is everywhere. That does not mean its impact should be ignored.

Engage’s annual summer staff party was a great reminder that fun and connection need to be built into the culture, not left to chance. Our team works hard in meaningful, challenging, and relationally demanding ways, and it matters that we create time to step back, laugh, and enjoy being together.

This year included amazing BBQ, plenty of connection, and some very memorable karaoke. Grateful for a team that shows up for our young adults and families, and also knows how to have a good time together.

Engage got a piano for Dewey House, and we are excited to support a passion that matters to one of our young adults. Sometimes music becomes more than an interest. It becomes an anchor that helps a young adult feel more grounded, connected, and willing to show up.

At Engage, part of our team’s role is to help each young adult find and cultivate their anchor. Not every young adult arrives with one, but it is part of the process to discover what helps them build motivation, participate more fully, and stay connected to the work they are doing in treatment.

Sometimes the anchor is music, fitness, art, school, work, adventure, or a meaningful relationship. It is part of how we build connection, trust, and momentum.
