At 1 year old, Faith is a calm, joyful presence — always smiling and taking in the world around her, surrounded by the constant love of her three older sisters. It’s a quiet happiness that feels hard-won when you understand where her story began.

During pregnancy, her mom, Emily, learned Faith would be born with pulmonary atresia, a rare heart defect that blocks blood flow through the right side of the heart. Faith’s care began immediately at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, where she underwent her first procedure within 24 hours and spent weeks in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CICU) undergoing multiple cardiac catheterizations.

Those early days were filled with uncertainty — watching her daughter connected to wires and machines, waiting for signs that things would turn in the right direction. And then, slowly, with the dedication of Faith’s care team and the love of her family, they did.

Today, Faith is growing and developing right where she needs to be. She was supported by Levine Children’s and The HEARTest Yard’s CHAMP program, which helps closely monitor babies with complex heart conditions as they transition home. Through regular check-ins, in-home nursing support and direct access to a dedicated care team, CHAMP has given Emily both guidance and reassurance throughout their journey.

Along the way, another layer of trust took shape.

Emily had been living with her own heart condition — a bicuspid aortic valve — well before Faith was born. But as she watched Dr. Andrew Dailey Schwartz care for her daughter with such intention and connection, something changed. In the middle of Faith’s journey, Emily made a decision of her own — to place her care in the same hands.

It reflected a deeper trust, shaped by the experience of watching her daughter cared for when it mattered most.

Months ago, Emily found herself wondering about the future — if Faith would be able to experience simple things like a trip to the beach. Recently, she did, dipping her toes in the sand on a family trip that once felt far out of reach.

There is still more ahead, but today, Faith is exactly who her family hoped she would be — strong, joyful and full of life ❤️

Finding joy in every moment.❤️

August has overcome more than most experience in a lifetime before even turning thirteen months old—and yet, his bright smile and loving spirit light up every room he enters.

Born in May 2025 at just 23 weeks due to severe maternal preeclampsia, a life-threatening pregnancy complication and intrauterine growth restriction, August’s fight began from the very start.

“Nothing prepares you for seeing your baby so small and fragile, but through every setback, August continued to fight with incredible resilience,” shares his mom, Alexis.

During his 285-day stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital, August was cared for by an extraordinary team who became like family. Through multiple procedures, including patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure, treatments for his lungs and close monitoring for complications of prematurity, he was met every step of the way with expert care and deep compassion.

From nurses and physicians to therapists and specialists, each person poured not only their skill, but their hearts into August’s journey—supporting both him and his family through every high and low.

Today, August is home and continuing to grow and thrive with oxygen support and a G-tube, while participating in speech and physical therapy. Every day brings new progress—and new reasons to celebrate. He recently celebrated his first birthday surrounded by surrounded by loved ones that have cheered him on since his early days and continues to go into each day with unwavering joy and courage.

We are incredibly proud of August for being a fighter and for reminding us that joy can still exist even in the toughest circumstances.

Inspiring change, powered by courage.❤️

Meet Roe Roe, who was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 3 in 2019. As an Atrium Health Levine Children’s patient, Roe Roe has been supported every step of the way by interdisciplinary teams at both Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte and Atrium Health Levine Children’s Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem. Our teams work together to ensure children like Roe Roe receive the very best care possible, close to home and beyond.

Roe Roe underwent intensive treatment – including spinal chemo infusions, IV chemotherapy sessions and more than 1,000 pills – before entering remission after 858 days of care. She showed incredible courage throughout the course of her treatment and her journey didn't end when she rang the bell in 2022.

Now, at 10 years old, her and her family use their voice to advocate for other patients and families across the nation. Roe Roe recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in Children's Hospital Association's Family Advocacy Day 2026, an annual event that brings together hospital leaders and patient families from across the country to share personal stories that help shape policy decisions and improve care for children.

This year, Roe Roe was among 55 patient advocates – from as young as 21 months to 21 years old – gathered to use their voices to inspire change.

“Attending Family Advocacy Day gives families the opportunity to share their lived experiences and demonstrate their impact, while also advocating for research that focuses not only on finding a cure but on improving treatments,” shared Brenner Children's Hospital president, Dr. Alisa Starbuck, highlighting the impact of advocacy.

We’re incredibly proud of Roe Roe and her family for turning their journey into an opportunity to advocate for other young patients, and grateful to leaders like Dr. Starbuck for being a part of elevating their voices.

06/08/2026

As a certified pediatric nurse practitioner at Atrium Health Levine Children's NorthPark Pediatrics, Brianna Alvarado is passionate about providing compassionate, personalized care that helps children thrive at every stage of development.

Inspired by a family legacy in nursing, Brianna’s interest in healthcare began at an early age while accompanying her mother to nursing school classes. That early fascination with medicine grew into a lifelong commitment to caring for others. After earning her nursing degree from Florida State University and her pediatric nurse practitioner degree from Stony Brook University, she spent nearly 15 years caring for patients, including eight years in the neonatal intensive care unit before becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner.

What Brianna finds most rewarding about pediatrics is building lasting relationships with children and their families. From supporting new parents through the newborn stage to watching patients grow and reach important milestones, she values the opportunity to partner with families throughout their healthcare journey. She strives to make every visit engaging, empowering and tailored to each child's unique needs.

Brianna wants parents and patients to know that she is committed to listening closely, fostering collaboration and creating a welcoming environment where children feel comfortable and confident. Her goal is to ensure families feel heard, respected and actively involved in every healthcare decision.

Outside of work, Brianna enjoys traveling with her husband and two sons, hiking, skiing, cooking, crocheting and tackling DIY home projects. Alongside their rescue dog, Ellie, her family is always looking forward to their next adventure together.

We are so proud of teammates like Brianna for going above and beyond in delivering exceptional patient care.
