July is also Disability Pride Month.
Aging often brings changes that meet the definition of disability: a stroke that affects mobility, hearing loss that reshapes conversation, macular degeneration that limits reading, dementia that changes how someone navigates the world. And for older adults who have always had a disability, aging adds new layers on top of a lifelong experience.
Here's what we've learned from working with our clients: losing an ability doesn't mean losing autonomy. What it takes is adaptation. Assistive tech. Home modifications. A patient care team. A family that meets someone where they are, not where they used to be.
The disability community has been teaching this for decades. Aging doesn't have to be a story of loss. It can be a story of adjustment — with the right support in place.
If your family is navigating new adaptations for an aging loved one, we can help. Reach out anytime.
