We were honored to spend time with the Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics team at UVA , sharing frameworks for identifying autistic language patterns across the spectrum.
Language is much more than words, and the way we understand, assess, and support autistic communication matters. Moving beyond traditional, neurotypical expectations of language means recognizing the many ways autistic individuals communicate, connect, process, and make meaning of the world around them.
Our conversation explored frameworks that help us look at language through a neurodiversity-affirming lens, recognize individual communication profiles, and better understand the relationship between language, social communication, and neurodevelopment.
This supports our mission, bridging research and clinical practice, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and helping professionals move toward approaches that honor all the ways people communicate.
Thank you to the UVA DBP team for the opportunity to share, learn, and collaborate. We are grateful to be part of these conversations, and the ongoing work of building informed, affirming, and responsive systems of care in our community and beyond 🧠❤️
