Black Bear Academy opened in Chicago in June 2003, founded by Maureen Black. Tall, PsyD, a clinical neuropsychologist and founder of the Center for Comprehensive Neurobehavioral Care (CCNC). Today BBA is a day school for children 18 months through 1st grade and a therapy and evaluation practice for ages 18 months to 18, in North Center. Teachers and therapists work from one shared plan for each child, using structured, multisensory methods and Conscious Discipline. Our sister school, Black Bear Elementary, serves kindergarten through 8th grade.

Our first graders are stepping into the shoes of real scientists this school year! Through hands-on exploration and lots of curiosity, our young scientists will learn how to:

🔎 Ask scientific questions

Morning Meeting at Black Bear Academy! 🐻

Each morning, our classes come together for Morning Meeting, rooted in Conscious Discipline. It’s a special time to slow down, connect with one another, and begin our day feeling safe, seen, and part of our classroom community. 🤍

With our “Who’s Here Today?” board, we celebrate each friend who is at school and remind one another that everyone belongs. We also take a moment to “Wish Well” for friends and teachers who are away, sending them caring thoughts and letting them know they are missed.

Because at Black Bear, every child matters, every connection counts, and everyone has a place in our community.✨

With both half-day and full-day options available, our program is designed to provide a supportive, engaging environment where children can build confidence, connection, regulation, and social skills through structured play and learning.

We intentionally keep our groups small to create a more personalized experience for every child.
