FROM OUR BACKYARD TO YOUR KITCHEN!

Did you know that loofah sponges actually grow on vines? That's right! They're not from the ocean, and they're definitely not made from plastic!

We're excited to introduce our homegrown, handmade loofah dish sponges, grown right in our own backyard at Wild Roots Apothecary & Seed Shop!

But we didn't stop at harvesting them! I added a little extra love by hand-sewing fabric onto one side, creating a beautiful, dual-sided kitchen sponge that's both practical and sustainable.

🌱 TWO SIDES, ONE NATURAL CLEANING SOLUTION!

🌿 Natural Loofah Side: Perfect for scrubbing dishes, pots, pans, and tackling stuck-on food with the naturally textured fibers of the luffa gourd.

🌿 Hand-Sewn Fabric Side: A softer surface for everyday wiping, washing, and gentler cleaning tasks.

WHY SWITCH FROM STORE-BOUGHT PLASTIC SPONGES?

🌱 Less Plastic: Natural loofah fibers offer an alternative to synthetic sponges that can shed microplastics during use.

🌱 Plant-Based & Renewable: Loofahs grow from seeds on vines, making them a wonderful renewable resource.

🌱 Biodegradable Fibers: Unlike conventional plastic sponges that can remain in landfills for years, untreated loofah fibers naturally break down over time.

🌱 Reusable & Practical: With proper care, these sponges can be used repeatedly, helping reduce disposable kitchen waste.

🌱 Homegrown & Handmade: Every loofah was grown, harvested, cleaned, and finished by hand, with fabric carefully sewn onto one side.

A LITTLE LOOFAH LOVE & CARE

Rinse thoroughly after each use, squeeze out excess water, and hang or place somewhere with good airflow to dry completely. Replace when worn or if odors or mold develop.

FROM SEED TO SPONGE!

There's something incredibly rewarding about planting a seed, nurturing it through the growing season, harvesting what nature provides, and transforming it into something useful for our homes.

These aren't mass-produced sponges shipped from a factory. They're a little piece of our homestead, made with our own two hands.

And while the natural loofah fibers are biodegradable, the compostability of the finished sponge depends on the fabric and thread used.

Grown in our backyard. Harvested by hand. Sewn with love. Rooted in sustainability.

Stop by and check out our newest handmade additions! Sometimes living a little greener starts with something as simple as the sponge sitting beside your kitchen sink.

HERB SPOTLIGHT: ANGELICA ROOT
Angelica archangelica
A Timeless Botanical Rooted in Herbal Tradition

At Wild Roots Apothecary & Seed Shop, we believe some of nature's greatest treasures are found beneath the soil. Today, we're highlighting Angelica Root, a beautifully aromatic herb with a rich history in traditional European herbalism.

Often referred to as the “Root of the Holy Ghost” or “Herb of the Angels,” Angelica has been treasured for centuries for its distinctive earthy aroma, warming qualities, and traditional role in herbal wellness.

TRADITIONAL HERBAL USES

Digestive Comfort & Support
Angelica root has long been used as a bitter, aromatic digestive herb. Traditionally enjoyed before or after meals, it has been used to encourage digestive secretions, support appetite, and provide comfort following heavy meals. Herbalists have also historically used it for occasional gas and bloating.

Respiratory & Seasonal Wellness
In traditional European herbal practices, Angelica was included in seasonal herbal preparations and warming botanical formulas intended to support respiratory comfort. Its aromatic compounds made it a popular ingredient in traditional herbal teas and tonics during colder months.

Warming & Grounding Properties
Angelica is considered a warming herb in traditional herbalism. Its earthy, slightly spicy aroma makes it a beautiful addition to comforting herbal blends, especially during the fall and winter seasons.

Traditional Women's Herbalism
Angelica root also has a history of use in traditional women's herbal preparations, particularly those associated with menstrual comfort. However, these historical uses are not proof of effectiveness, and Angelica should be avoided during pregnancy.

A LITTLE BOTANICAL HISTORY

Angelica is a tall, aromatic biennial or short-lived perennial plant belonging to the Apiaceae family, which also includes carrots, parsley, and fennel.

Native to northern Europe and parts of Asia, this beautiful botanical produces large clusters of delicate greenish-white flowers and can grow several feet tall.

During the Middle Ages, Angelica became associated with protection, healing, and spiritual traditions. Its name is connected to the Latin word angelicus, meaning “angelic,” reflecting the special place it held in European folklore.

Both its roots and stems have been valued in traditional herbal practices and culinary preparations.

WAYS TO ENJOY ANGELICA ROOT

Herbal Tea: The dried root can be gently simmered in water to create a warming, earthy botanical infusion.

Herbal Blends: Angelica pairs beautifully with traditional aromatic herbs such as ginger, fennel, peppermint, and cinnamon.

Tinctures & Extracts: Historically used in concentrated herbal preparations, often as part of digestive bitter formulas.

Culinary Traditions: Angelica has a long history of flavoring liqueurs, bitters, syrups, and other European culinary creations.

DID YOU KNOW?

Angelica root has a distinctive flavor that is earthy, slightly sweet, bitter, and pleasantly aromatic. Its essential oils contribute to its recognizable fragrance, while its bitter compounds help explain its historical popularity in digestive preparations.

SAFETY WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

Angelica root is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals due to insufficient safety information and its history of use in preparations intended to influence menstruation.

Angelica contains naturally occurring furanocoumarins that may increase sensitivity to sunlight and ultraviolet exposure. Use caution with prolonged sun exposure.

Individuals taking prescription medications, especially anticoagulants (blood thinners), or those with bleeding disorders, diabetes, or other medical conditions should consult a qualified healthcare professional before use.

Avoid use if you have a known allergy to Angelica or related plants in the Apiaceae family. Do not combine Angelica with other herbs or supplements without considering potential interactions.

Angelica should only be obtained from reputable suppliers with verified botanical identification. Members of the Apiaceae family can closely resemble highly toxic plants, including poison hemlock and water hemlock.

Keep all herbal products out of reach of children. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs.

Hurricane crafting on the back porch is apparently a thing in your 40s! 😂🧵

We harvested SO many loofahs this year from just TWO plants, so I figured why not put this hurricane downtime to good use and get started on sewing them up!

Some are filled with naturally made body soap, while others are perfect for scrubbing dishes in the kitchen or using in the bath. After harvesting and processing, we soak them for a few days to help soften and clean the natural fibers.

Next up, I'll be sewing fabric onto one side to give them a little extra charm and functionality! 🪡

There's just something special about growing something from a tiny seed and turning it into a useful, handmade product. 💚

These homegrown goodies will be making their way into Wild Roots Apothecary and our local markets next month!
