WEAU shared an Aging Untold segment this week about something a lot of people never plan for: what happens to your pet if you unexpectedly can't take care of it for a stretch.
One of the experts on the show says it about as plainly as it can be said. You might have a fall. You might end up in the hospital. Who's going to feed the dog, take him out, feed the cats and clean the litter box?

As a firefighter and paramedic, I've been in houses where someone left with the ambulance and the animals stayed behind. Usually a neighbor sorts it out, or a family member drives over. Not always, though, and nobody involved is in a good frame of mind to be figuring it out at 3 am.

The show's advice is simple, and I'd echo it. Start with whatever you already do when you go on vacation, because somebody has fed your dog before. Write that name down, ask if they'd be willing to do it on short notice, and make sure your family knows who it is. The experts also suggest setting a little aside for the vet, since money is often what makes a person hesitate to say yes.

WEAU and Aging Untold ran a segment worth watching this week: home health versus home care, and the difference most families do not learn until they are standing in the middle of it.

I will let the show's experts draw that line, because it is their lane and they do it well. The short version is that home health usually means skilled medical help, with a nurse or aide working under a care plan, sometimes covered by Medicare for a set period of time. Home care usually means nonmedical daily support: companionship, meal prep, and help with bathing and dressing. Both are about caring for the person.

Here is the part I want to add, because it is the piece almost no one budgets for. All of that care happens inside a house. And the house has its own role in caring for those who live within it. After all, for most people, their home is their most valuable asset, and we are dedicated to protecting it.

That is my lane, and it is different from the job a home health aide or a CNA does. A CNA cares for your mom. I make sure the home she is being cared for in is safe and ready.
