Benefis Teton Medical Center

Benefis Teton Medical Center BTMC is a critical access hospital located in beautiful Choteau, Montana along the Rocky Mountain Front.

For more than 130 years, Benefis Health System has been a trusted provider of care for northcentral Montana, and we’ve made it our mission to provide excellent care for all, healing body, mind, and spirit. Our legacy began in 1892 when five Catholic Sisters opened the Columbus Hospital in Great Falls. Six years later, a Methodist group opened Deaconess Hospital. The two hospitals merged in 1996 un

der the new Benefis name, derived using Latin root words “bene” (meaning good) and “fis” (faith). And we have continued to grow throughout the region, ensuring we are able to bring our programs and services to more Montanans. Benefis Health System now serves about 230,000 residents in a vast 14-county region. We are located on three campuses in Great Falls, in Montana’s Capital City of Helena, and in the rural towns of Choteau and Fort Benton. Benefis has more than 500 beds, including long-term and hospice care, and employs more than 300 physicians. We are consistently ranked among America’s top hospitals by the nation’s leading healthcare ratings organizations for a range of services, including cancer care, joint replacement, stroke treatment, wound care, and home health. We are honored to call this part of Montana home, and we never forget that the best care is personal. That’s why we treat each patient as we would a family member or friend. SAIL classes begin tomorrow at the Choteau Senior Center with our very own BTMC employee, Stephanie Zwerneman!

We had a fantastic kickoff with fitness assessments earlier this week, and we're excited to officially begin SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life) on Thursday, August 6.

Join us at the Choteau Senior Center every Monday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for this free, 60-minute class designed to help improve strength, balance, flexibility, endurance, and overall health.

Missed the first session? It's not too late to join! We'll help you get caught up.

Despite the name, SAIL isn't just for adults 65 and older. Anyone looking to improve their fitness and stay active is welcome to participate.

If you'd like to enjoy lunch at the Senior Center after class (11:30 a.m.), simply call 406-466-2121 by 9:00 a.m. that morning to reserve your meal.

As temperatures climb across central Montana, it's important to help children stay safe in the heat.

Keep these simple tips in mind:
Encourage frequent water breaks before kids feel thirsty.
Plan outdoor activities during the cooler morning or evening hours.
Dress children in lightweight, light-colored clothing and remember sunscreen.
Take breaks indoors in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.
Never leave a child alone in a vehicle.

Watch for signs of heat illness, including unusual drowsiness, confusion, severe headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps, rapid breathing, or little to no urination. If a child becomes confused, unresponsive, or shows signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

A little preparation can help keep your family safe all summer long.

Wildfire season can affect air quality across North Central Montana—even when the nearest fire is miles away.

Before heading outside, check your local Air Quality Index (AQI) at AirNow.gov. If smoke levels are elevated, consider limiting strenuous outdoor activity, especially for children, older adults, people with heart or lung conditions, and those who are pregnant.

Welcome Jonathon Solonar, PA-C, to Benefis Teton Medical Center!

Jonathon is a physician assistant who cares for patients at Benefis Teton Medical Center. He is enthusiastic about providing high-quality care for the community of Choteau and the surrounding area. He was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by his grandfather, who was a pathologist in Havre, Montana. He first chose a path of military service with the U.S. Navy and then set his sights on physician assistant school.

Personalized, comprehensive care is at the center of Jonathon’s practice. He starts by asking the right questions and working to build a clinical relationship based on collaboration and trust. “I do everything I can to coordinate a patient’s care plan based on their goals,” he says. “I want them to feel comfortable discussing anything with me, and I will do whatever I can to make the care process easier for my patients.”

Jonathan and his wife are excited about getting to know the Choteau community. He enjoys training with his golden retrievers, fly fishing, and duck hunting in his free time.

Did you know skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S.? In Montana, it’s easy to get caught up in the beautiful weather and views during the summer but be sure to do so with the proper skin protection. Accessories like hats and full-coverage clothing reduce UV exposure to the skin. Cover your skin today — protect your health for tomorrow. Learn more at benefis.org/dermatology
