Did I ever tell y’all the story about how my husband and I worked together? We are both Family Medicine physicians. We also trained in the same residency program at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. We were in residency together for one year. After he finished residency, we both ended up working for our residency. One of the major issues that we tackled was how to make our residency program more diverse and inclusive.
We spent some years working on this issue and we definitely made a huge impact on the culture of our residency. There is still more work to do but when I am recruiting graduating medical students for Match Cincinnati, I’m proud to say that I’m offering them a chance to be at a place that is better than I left it.
I must also mention that part of my inspiration for starting this initiative is learning from the June 20, 2022, Stat News article that Black residents are dismissed from residencies at a higher rate than white residents. I feel grateful that I trained at a program that does not have this kind of track record. Every one of the 20+ Black residents who started at my program over the past 16 years, since I’ve been here, has graduated! Being a part of the faculty team showed us how much love and concern was poured into each resident to have those types of statistics. We took it further and we’re not done yet.
Match Cincinnati is a networking event for graduating medical students to meet residents and physicians with stories similar to ours. We want more residents to graduate residency and have great careers like we have been able to have. We want to pay it forward.
