Intentional acts of service, friendship and activism are at the core of our ethos. Underpinning all of this is a commitment to racial, sexual and religious diversity. Sharing this commitment, the administrative team, the Board of Directors and residents unified in collaboration to significantly reduce the energy costs and carbon footprint of the whole community through three LEED certified buildings, the installation of over 2,000 solar panels, initiating solar power and since 2000 a 50% reduction in water use. Licensed with the State of California as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), Pilgrim Place is a type of retirement community where a continuum of care - independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care - are offered. As an intentional community, Pilgrim Place’s commitment to caring for each other extends beyond our campus. On Thursday, May 29, Pilgrim Place hosted a free Senior Resource Fair featuring almost 50 vendors and community partners. Residents of Claremont came out to engage with experts in healthcare and home health, fitness and wellness, education, financial planning, and more. We were delighted to provide this opportunity for older adults to learn about and connect with services specialized in planning for the future. On May 14, nearly 30 Pilgrim Place residents shared their artistic talents at the first-ever collective exhibition of resident paintings. Hosted by the Scrooby Committee at Abernethy Dining Room, the event was called “Fire to Ice: Kaleidoscope of Styles,” and represented a wide breadth of media and color. “Those who attended were amazed by the sheer number of painters and the immense talent we have in our community,” said Lisa Oglesby Hamilton, who serves as Resident Creative Director of the Pilgrim Place Painters’ Guild. Lisa, who started painting in retirement, noted that research shows creating and appreciating art contributes to longevity. “Pilgrim Place is an arts colony, and this environment inspires and energizes the creative process. The artists really enjoyed sharing their art with their fellow residents, and we have even more residents who create in other art forms, including pottery, weaving, stained glass, photography, poetry, playwriting, and more.”

Pilgrim Place residents recently participated in a music jam session with several undergraduate students and professors from The Claremont Colleges. The event idea came from Sasha Lu, a graduating senior at Pitzer College, and Pilgrim Place resident Nan Cooney. Nan brought in the musical talents of fellow residents Cathy Curtis and Margaret Davis to play different types of songs alongside student musicians—from The Beatles and John Denver to 1900s ragtime, from Maroon Five and Bob Dylan to an old round from the 17th century. “It’s amazing to see the magic of music bridging the many decades that separated our ages,” said Cathy. “Each of us teaching, each of us learning, all of us loving playing and singing songs together.”

Pilgrim Place was honored to receive the Bridge Builder Award from the Draper Center for Community Partnerships at Pomona College. Presented at the Center’s annual Community Engagement Awards Ceremony, this award recognizes a community partner that has demonstrated a commitment to facilitating sustainable and collaborative relationships between the Pomona College community and other internal or external communities. Pilgrim Place was nominated for this award by Pomona students in recognition of its work with Orientation Adventure last August and the Pilgrim Exchange, an intergenerational club through which Pomona College students connect with Pilgrim Place residents at Castle Café events each Friday. These efforts build upon Pilgrim Place’s intergenerational learning foundation, The Napier Initiative, in partnership with The Claremont Colleges.

On Tuesday, April 29, Pilgrim Place was honored to host presenters from Homeboy Industries, a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles, CA, dedicated to the rehabilitation and re-entry of former gang members and incarcerated persons. Residents heard from two counselors about their journey through the organization and the important work they continue to do in their community. Father Greg Boyle, founder of the organization, then spoke about his time serving as pastor of Dolores Mission Church in Boyle Heights, years of witnessing the devastating impact of gang violence on his community, and his work fostering a space and culture built on loving your neighbor, rather than fearing the world. Father Boyle’s approach, centered on “neighborism,” aligns beautifully with Pilgrim Place’s mission of justice, peace, care for the earth, and care for each other. We thank Father Boyle and Homeboy Industries for their inspiring work and global impact.

Last week, Napier Awardees Zumaya Toussaint-Farrell and Nathan Flores signed their grant contracts, setting into motion their fellowship projects that connect to Pilgrim Place’s values of justice, peace, and care for the earth. Thanks to the generosity of donors to The Napier Initiative, each Fellow has been awarded a $20,000 grant to implement their project—Zumaya will head to Grenada to revitalize composting systems at Belmont Estate, while Nathan will work with state and federal governments in Yucatán, Mexico to build a migrant children’s shelter. Both students are graduating from Pomona College next month.
