Pilgrim Place is an intentional, caring multi-level senior living community striving to be socially responsible; environmentally sustainable; diverse in race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and religion; and committed to excellence in health care and developing services that foster meaningful growth and dignity for all who live, work, and volunteer here. Pilgrim Place is a community of persons who have dedicated their lives to improving the lives of others and continue to do so in retirement. Woven into daily activities and practices at Pilgrim Place are themes of service to each other, support of local and global peace, advocacy for social justice efforts and a passion for environmental stewardship. Intentional acts of service, friendship and activism are at the core of our ethos. Underpinning all of this is a commitment to racial, sexual and religious diversity. Sharing this commitment, the administrative team, the Board of Directors and residents unified in collaboration to significantly reduce the energy costs and carbon footprint of the whole community through three LEED certified buildings, the installation of over 2,000 solar panels, initiating solar power and since 2000 a 50% reduction in water use. Licensed with the State of California as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), Pilgrim Place is a type of retirement community where a continuum of care - independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care - are offered. Nancy Jacobs began volunteering at Pilgrim Place Festival more than 10 years ago, after her longtime friend and Pilgrim Place resident, Carolyn Loper, introduced her to the annual tradition. “It was so much fun that I made it a part of my schedule each year.” Nancy travels from the Bay Area to volunteer in the Treasures Booth, which features fine jewelry and china. “Pilgrim Place is the most caring and intellectually stimulating senior community I have ever seen. The people who live in this beautiful place are so kind.”

When Nancy learned about the opportunity to sponsor the Festival’s children’s activities, she knew she wanted to get more involved. “I am a volunteer storyteller for the Asian Art Museum, and I knew that contributing to children’s activities at Festival also supports the residents at Pilgrim Place.” One of her favorite Festival memories was meeting Santa, a special moment that she later shared on her Christmas card.

Festival at Pilgrim Place is fun for the whole family! Live entertainment, tasty food, handmade and gently used items for sale, and free children's activities. This year kids will have the chance to make their own rocket launchers! They can then make their way through chalk drawing, face painting, a live animal exhibit, and a ride on the Festival train. With something for everyone, we hope you'll join us on Friday, November 13 and Saturday, November 14, 10AM to 4PM at Pilgrim Place.

Earlier this week, Unidine Regional Vice President Ben Bianchini and Unidine Director of Regional Operations Pooya Shapourian presented Pilgrim Place with a generous gift of $28,000. This contribution will benefit the Resident Health and Support Program (RHSP) through the upcoming Festival and The Napier Initiative’s intergenerational learning programs.

Joining Chief Executive Officer Leif Cameron and Chief Financial Officer Todd Barretta in accepting this donation are Festival Chair Richard Bentley and Napier Council Chair Mary Elizabeth Moore. Join The Packing House, Local Collective Market and Smell House in celebration of “Pilgrims & Panthers: Claremont Artists Across the Generations.” The September 5 show will feature the Pilgrim Place Painters’ Guild including works by Rose Ash, Margaret Burdge, Maribel Dana, Ron Evans, Lisa Oglesby Hamilton, Gwyn Kirk, Paul Kittlaus, Cristina “Duffy” Lawson, Eleanor Scott Meyers; Pilgrim Place Potters with works by Jean Denton, Debra Gara, Eleanor Loeliger, David Loeliger and Pia Moriarity; Pilgrim Place Weavers’ Guild award-winning weavers will display creations; Fabrications include handmade quilts, Karyn Packard with one-of-a-kind purses, and Tamara Rhoads with unique clothes for “US Girls” dolls; and beautiful stained glass creations that transform light.

Pilgrim Place welcomed first-year and transfer students from the Draper Center for Community Partnerships, along with their staff, for a day of service and connection. As part of their new student orientation at Pomona College, students were introduced to our campus, performed various acts of service with residents to benefit our Pilgrim Place community, and learned more about our intergenerational learning opportunities and The Napier Initiative. Pherell Washington, a sophomore at Pomona, was interviewed during the lunch session by Randy Pierre, Post-Baccalaureate Fellow for Community Engagement at the Draper Center. During his interview, Pherell reflected on his experiences at this same orientation event last year, which led to the creation of The Pilgrim Exchange, a club for Pomona students to foster community and intergenerational dialogue with Pilgrim Place residents. “At Pilgrim Place, I feel a sense of home,” said Pherell. Napier Council Chair Mary Elizabeth Moore quoted mentor Tamara Rhoads in closing, “When we look into your eyes, we see the future.”

This year is the 150th anniversary of Doshisha Women’s College in Kyoto, Japan. Pilgrim Place had the esteemed privilege of hosting a delegation of alumni from Doshisha last Thursday, August 20.
The fingerprints of Doshisha's legacy can be seen all over Pilgrim Place's campus. From donations of stained glass by famed artist Keiko Miura and artifacts displayed in The Petterson Museum of Intercultural Art, to their intertwined history with Pilgrim Place residents, both past and present. After touring the campus and museum, the delegation lunched together with Pilgrim Place residents and were given heartfelt thanks and appreciate from Brent Maire (Chair of the Board), Karen Levin (Vice Chair), Leif Cameron (CEO), Laura Gallardo (Vice President of Philanthropy), and Gisele Tackoor (Former Director of Admissions). Laura Gallardo then accepted a gift to Pilgrim Place from the Doshisha alumni, presented to her by a member of the delegation. It was truly a day of strengthening long-term relationships, as well as discovering new connections.

Thank you to all the alumni who honored our community with their visit. Pilgrim Place is deeply grateful for Doshisha's friendship and generosity.
