Every September, the medical community celebrates Women in Medicine Month, and the women physicians who have shaped the profession through their time, wisdom, and commitment to patients.

Women now make up nearly half of all physicians in training, and their presence has transformed what compassionate, patient-centered care looks like across New Hampshire and the nation. From the exam room to leadership roles, women physicians continue to strengthen the bond between doctors and patients that Your Care is at Our Core is built to protect.

For over a century, the white coat has been the preeminent symbol of the physician, and for more than 30 years, the White Coat Ceremony has marked a physician’s first promise to their patients. This month, thousands of new medical students will slip on their first white coat, continuing a tradition created to instill compassion at the very start of a medical career.

As they take their first oath these students are not just starting school. They are beginning a lifelong commitment to the doctor-patient relationship, to protecting time in the exam room, and to putting patients' needs at the center of every decision.

Traditional physicians' garb changed from black to white at the time that antiseptic practices became common in medicine. White coats gained symbolic value, and Arnold P. Gold, MD, instituted annual ceremony for medical students.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month. Recently, New Hampshire Medical Society had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Arsnow and Dr. Edwards, both New Hampshire pediatricians to talk about some of the legislative challenges that healthcare has faced this year, communicating with patients in an era of misinformation, and the importance of community health.

Recently, Drs. Gillian Sowden and Dax Volle, both NHMS members, submitted an Op-Ed to regarding Medicaid work rules threatening progress on mental healthcare.

In their op-ed, Drs. Sowden and Volle explain Medicaid community engagement requirements that are set to begin in 2017 for some Granite Advantage enrollees, and how there must be a priority focus shift now to ensure that there are no disruptions to behavioral healthcare services and substance use disorder treatment.

For many individuals living with mental illness or in recovery, complex paperwork and reporting requirements can become barriers to maintaining coverage. Protecting access to Medicaid means protecting access to medications, therapy, recovery services, and the stability that keeps people healthy and out of crisis.
