Zendaya became vegetarian at 11, after learning more about how animals became the meat people eat.

She has never framed it as a health trend or a love of vegetables. For her, it was about animals.

The instinct behind that decision is one vegans will recognize: once the animal matters in the equation, food stops being only about taste, convenience or tradition.

The question becomes whether enjoying something is enough reason to keep using an animal for it.

For Zendaya, meat was where that question first changed her mind.
