Can you tell which ankle I rolled? 🧐

Surgery can save lives -- but it isn’t always the best first step for chronic pain. In my latest post I explain why conservative care deserves a real chance before signing the consent form, and how surgery can sometimes make pain worse by disrupting the body’s interconnected systems.

I want to be clear about something upfront: surgery saves lives. It is absolutely the right call in the right circumstances -- acute trauma, progressive neurological deficits, certain structural instabilities. I'm not anti-surgery.But I am anti "surgery as the first resort" for pain that hasn't been...

Neck & trap tightness is one of the most complained-about things I hear - and one of the most misunderstood. Your traps aren’t failing you - it’s covering for the deep stability muscles underneath that aren’t doing their jobs…. stretch it all you want, it’ll be back tomorrow.

Train the stabilizers underneath & actually fix the root cause. ✔️

Your lumbar discs and sciatica aren’t the problem - they’re the symptom. Injections can quiet the noise for a bit, and surgery might clean up the damage… but neither one fixes why it happened in the first place. Your hips, thoracic spine, glutes, and core all play a role in how much load your lower back is carrying every single day. When the team stops working together, your lumbar pays the price. Real relief starts with understanding the whole chain - not just the part that hurts.

Think rest is the answer to your pain? A physical therapist explains why the opposite is true - and what to do instead.

Rest is the default advice for pain. And it’s wrong - most of the time. Your body was built to heal through movement, not around it. The SAID principle as well as the latest research on injury recovery - all points in the same direction: keep moving.

What did your doctor or PT tell you after your injury? I’m curious… 🤔

Forward flexion (spine being curved forward) is what most people spend their time sitting in all day. Break out of that tension by adding in spinal extension (the reverse motion) - this movement specifically targets your thoracic spine to help it move and feel better.

Burnout doesn't just live in your mind.

It lives in your neck. Your jaw. Your hips. Your sleep. Your pain tolerance.

As a physical therapist, I spent years treating people whose pain had no clear structural cause — no significant imaging findings, no obvious injury, no pattern that made sense on paper. But when I looked at the full picture, the answer was almost always the same: prolonged, chronic stress that had been accumulating in the body for months or years.

Here's what chronic stress actually does to your physiology:

🔴 Elevates your baseline muscle tone — your nervous system interprets stress as threat and keeps the whole body in a guarded, contracted state
🔴 Changes how you breathe — shifting from deep diaphragmatic breathing to shallow chest breathing, which affects spinal stability and compresses your cervical spine
🔴 Lowers your pain threshold — the same physical issue genuinely hurts more when you're chronically stressed
🔴 Disrupts sleep — and without quality sleep, tissue repair slows and recovery stalls

This is why treating burnout-related pain as a purely mechanical problem rarely works. The body and the nervous system have to be addressed together.

The most effective starting point? Not aggressive treatment. Not more exercise. Nervous system regulation — breathing work, gentle progressive movement, and the lifestyle foundations that make recovery possible.

If your pain tracks with your stress levels, that's not a coincidence. That's your body asking for a different kind of care.

I treated a lot of high-stress, hard-working individuals in my career. And across all of them — different ages, different jobs, different fitness levels — I kept seeing the same presentation: pain that didn't have a clear structural explanation. Pain that came and went, moved around, got worse u...
