One of the biggest fears about starting treatment is who might find out.

Here is the part that gets left out. Your treatment is confidential. You choose who knows, and you do not owe anyone your story before you are ready to tell it. Privacy is not something you have to earn here, it is how care works from the first visit.

Recovery Month is a good moment to know what exists near you before you need it.

Outpatient care covers the medication and counseling side at a clinic close to home. Counseling on its own gives you a regular hour with someone who knows your situation. Peer groups meet on evenings and weekends when the clinic is closed, and family resources exist for the people trying to help without knowing how. None of these require you to pick one. Most people end up using two or three over time. In Boulder, Craig and Montrose, all of it is within reach.

Save this and send it to whoever might need it later. Find your nearest clinic at denverrecoverygroup.com.

Every September the phrase shows up everywhere, and most people are not sure what it is actually for.

A new article explains what National Recovery Month means for people in Colorado, why it lands differently in a state this affected by overdose, and what you can practically do with the month whether you are in recovery, supporting someone, or still deciding. In Denver, Aurora and Boulder, that starts with a phone call that commits you to nothing.

Most of what gets posted this month is for people who already started.

If you are not there yet, this one is for you. You are allowed to ask questions without agreeing to anything. You can call a clinic and ask what a first visit involves, then hang up and think about it for a month. Nobody puts you on a list for asking. The distance between wondering and starting is usually made of unanswered questions, and those are cheap to fix.

Nobody warns you that the first month is the loudest one.

Early on, treatment takes up room. You are learning a new schedule and a new clinic, and it can feel like the whole thing is effort. Around month five or six, most of that noise settles into routine, and the energy you were spending on logistics goes back to your life. Knowing the hard part has a shape helps you get through it, because the version of this that feels heavy is not the permanent one.

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day.

In Colorado it is not an abstract date. Families here have lost people, and a lot of them are carrying that quietly today. The point of the day is twofold, to remember without shame and to make sure the people still at risk know where to go. If that is you, or someone in your house, the door is not closed. Care is local and available this week, not something that requires the perfect moment.

Nobody plans for the day it matters, which is exactly the point.

Naloxone reverses an opioid overdose, and the only version of it that helps is the one already in the house. In Colorado you can get it at pharmacies without a prescription, and many community programs distribute it at no cost. Keep it where someone else could find it too, not buried in a drawer only you open. Then tell one person where it is. That single conversation is most of the value.

If you are near Aurora and want to know where to get it locally, the link in our bio goes to denverrecoverygroup.com.

A lot of people hold back in that first session because they are not sure where it goes.

Here is the short answer. What you tell your counselor stays inside your care team. It is not passed along to your employer, and it is not shared with family unless you ask for that. Health privacy rules exist for exactly this reason. If you have a specific worry about who could find out, ask directly at your first visit and get a clear answer before you decide what to share.

International Overdose Awareness Day is Monday, and this is the part worth knowing before it arrives.

Risk is not fixed. After a period away from use, tolerance drops, which means an amount that once felt familiar is not the same amount to your body anymore. That is the gap where most harm happens, and it is not talked about enough. Naloxone matters for the same reason, and it only helps if someone nearby already has it. Staying connected to care is the piece that lowers risk over time rather than in the moment. In Denver, Lakewood and Colorado Springs, teams can point you to local naloxone access.

Save this and send it to someone who should have it. Find your nearest clinic at denverrecoverygroup.com.
