May is Better Speech and Hearing Month! 🗣️👂💚

This month is dedicated to raising awareness about communication, speech, language, hearing, and swallowing disorders while celebrating the impact that communication has on everyday life. Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists work to help individuals build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and connect more effectively with the world around them.

Communication is more than just words—it helps us learn, socialize, express emotions, and build relationships. Early support and intervention can make a meaningful difference in a child’s growth and success.

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, we’re celebrating the power of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) 💙

AAC devices don’t replace speech—they support and expand language. For many children, AAC provides a way to communicate while their verbal skills are still developing, and in many cases, it actually helps increase spoken language over time.

Here’s what that can look like:
✨ A child selects “want + snack” on device→ begins to say “want snack” verbally
✨ A child uses icons to label emotions → learns to say “I’m mad” or “I’m happy”
✨ A child builds longer sentences on their device → starts using more words when speaking

AAC gives children a way to express their thoughts, needs, and feelings, which reduces frustration and builds confidence. When communication improves, so does connection—with family, peers, and the world around them.

Every child deserves a voice, and AAC helps make that possible 💬✨

We had so much fun celebrating both Easter and Passover at WeeSpeak the past two weeks! 🐣🌸✨

Our friends enjoyed festive activities, including creating adorable crafts and participating in hands-on spring-themed fun, such as Easter egg hunts! We incorporated articulation practice, language development, and communication skills into each activity to keep learning fun, engaging, and meaningful.

We love bringing seasonal celebrations into our sessions while continuing to support each child’s speech and language growth! 💛🌷

Creative Communication in Action! 🐰🌸

Activities focus on:
🎨Articulation practice – Students practice their target sounds while creating simple crafts, repeating words and phrases as they cut, glue, and build.

🎨Following directions – Crafts provide a hands-on way to work on listening and sequencing (ex., “first cut, then glue”).

🎨Vocabulary building – As they create, students label materials and actions (ex., scissors, glue, paint) and learn new descriptive words.

🎨Requesting – Craft activities create natural opportunities for students to ask for materials, help, or more time using words, signs, or AAC.

🎨Expressive Language – Kids talk about what they’re making, describe their creations, and share ideas, helping expand sentences and storytelling skills.

🎨Social Skills – Craft time encourages turn-taking and engaging in conversation.

Who knew a little paper and glue could go such a long way in speech therapy?!

☘️ St. Patrick’s Day Speech Fun! ☘️

Activities focus on:
Articulation practice – Students can spin the articulation wheel and practice their target sound in words while collecting shamrocks or coins each time they say their sound correctly.

Category and vocabulary building – Using the “Pot of Gold Categories” activity, students sort picture coins into the correct category (ex., food, animals, body parts) and explain why the item belongs in that group.

Labeling and describing – Students play St. Patrick’s Day Bingo and label the pictures on their board (ex., leprechaun, rainbow, pot of gold). This encourages vocabulary practice while also expanding language with simple descriptions.

Fun themed stories and conversation – We read St. Patrick’s Day themed stories like "Pete the Cat: The Great Leprechaun Chase" and practice answering questions, retelling parts of the story, and predicting what might happen next.

Seasonal activities are a great way to keep learning engaging while helping children build important communication skills. Who knew speech therapy could be this lucky? 🍀
