Throwback Thursday! 🏥✨

Take a look back at the early days of Mease Dunedin Hospital.

Located in the heart of Dunedin, our hospital first opened in 1937 under the guidance of Dr. Jack Mease as a 19-bed facility — complete with a laboratory, cafeteria and operating room.

What makes this history so special? It was truly built by the community, for the community. Local residents encouraged Dr. Mease to create a hospital to serve their neighbors, and many even helped build it — accepting partial payment in medical care instead of cash.

That spirit of care and connection still lives on today. 💙

Now a 120-bed facility, Mease Dunedin continues to grow, with expanded surgical services, a critical care unit, and spaces designed to better serve our patients, families and team members — all while staying rooted in the same community-first mission that started it all.

Today is National Cancer Survivors Day, a time to recognize our patients who have and are fighting cancer. Patients like Ron Buck, a Tierra Verde resident, who was diagnosed with stage 2 pancreatic cancer last year. After undergoing extensive surgery and withstanding a 12-cycle aggressive chemotherapy regiment to battle the disease at BayCare's St. Anthony's Hospital, Ron is now a cancer survivor. 💜

Ron is among the more than 18 million people in the United States who are cancer survivors. Today, Mease Dunedin Hospital honors each of our patients who are in the fight — and are winning. 💪

To celebrate the end of treatment, many patients ring a bell to represent the restoration of harmony and balance in life. Ron sure did on New Year’s Eve 2025. "I rang that bell really hard," he said.

At BayCare, our team members are there to applaud the patients as they ring out of their treatment. Our oncology teams are working with the latest advancements in cancer care. And by late summer, we'll continue those efforts with the opening of our new proton therapy center.

Not every day a giant shark makes rounds at the hospital! 🦈💙

We had so much fun welcoming the Clearwater Threshers to Mease Dunedin Hospital that we had to share a few more moments from their recent visit — especially these snapshots with our incredible team members.

From hallway drop-ins to quick photo ops, the team brought a great boost of energy to the day — and a reminder of just how special this community is. We’re so thankful to be part of it.

A couple weeks ago, Clearwater Threshers Baseball — along with everyone’s favorite shark, Phinley - The Jawesome Clearwater Threshers Mascot 🦈 — stopped by Mease Dunedin Hospital, bringing energy, laughter and plenty of smiles to our team members.

Their visit helped build excitement for tonight’s Pitch for Pink game — a special night to Help Strike Out Breast Cancer, with proceeds supporting breast health programs at Morton Plant Mease hospitals.

As BayCare Week comes to a close, we’re celebrating the heart of Mease Dunedin Hospital — our incredible team. 💙

This year’s theme, Backed by Values. Powered by Teamwork, was felt in every moment. Every day, our team members bring our BayCare values of trust, respect and dignity to life — in the way they care for patients, support one another and show up when it matters most. It’s how our mission becomes more than words — it’s something you can feel in every interaction.

Throughout the week, it was especially meaningful to see leaders out across the hospital, connecting with team members, sharing treats and taking time to say thank you. These moments were a simple but powerful reminder of the appreciation and pride we have in this team.
