Adults are carrying things too.

Grief. Stress. Anger. Disappointment. Relationships. Work. Family. Loss. Pressure. Things you thought you were over. Things you never really had time to process in the first place.

And a lot of adults have gotten so used to pushing through that they donโ€™t even realize how heavy it has gotten.

Sometimes you do not need another conversation.

Sometimes you do not need advice.

Hit something safely.
Break something with intention.
Write it out.
Sit in silence.
Speak something better back into yourself.
Laugh with your girls.
Rest.

Maybe they are outspoken but still learning how to use their voice.

Maybe other youth naturally trust them.

Maybe they keep everything inside until it comes out as anger, shutting down, or reacting without thinking.

At DREโ€™S Safe Place, we are opening 10 seats for teens ages 14-18 in our 16-week Youth Leadership & Mental Wellness Program.

This program brings leadership and mental wellness together.

Teens will learn how to recognize stress and emotional warning signs, understand what is happening in their bodies, and practice ways to release and regulate emotions before reacting.

They will identify coping tools and safe people, learn what healthy relationships look like, strengthen communication and public-speaking skills, and learn how to support a peer without taking responsibility for fixing everything.

They will also experience DREโ€™S interactive rooms, serve on the Youth Advisory Board, and work together to create a community project for other youth.

The program includes:

A weekly meal
Monthly recognition and incentives
Teen Mental Health First Aid Training
A CPR/AED certification opportunity
A graduation credential

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, but this conversation cannot only be for people who are already in crisis.

It has to include all of us.

If you lost someone to su***de, this post is not here to make you search the past for what you missed. Su***de is complex, warning signs are not always visible, and no one can predict every su***de.

If you are struggling, you do not need to have a plan or be close to acting before your thoughts deserve attention.

And if you are concerned about someone, you do not need perfect words before checking on them.

Suicidal thoughts do not have one look.

A person can laugh, work, care for their family, answer โ€œIโ€™m fine,โ€ and still be struggling privately.

They may say:

โ€œI wish I would not wake up.โ€

โ€œEverybody would be better without me.โ€

โ€œI cannot keep doing this.โ€

Those words should not be dismissed as drama, weakness, selfishness, or attention-seeking.

Not every change in mood, sleep, substance use, or behavior means someone is suicidal. But when changes are new, increasing, or connected to a painful event, loss, or major change, check in.

This month needs to leave us with more than a ribbon.

It needs to leave us with words we can actually use.

If you are concerned about someone, ask directly:

Asking directly does not put the idea in their mind.

If you are the person struggling, say:

Read that again.

Because September has a way of making people look backward.

At the plans they made in January.

The money they said they were going to save.

The weight they wanted to lose.

The boundaries they were finally going to set.

The thing they were going to start.

The thing they were going to stop.

And somewhere in there, it can start feeling like the year has already been decided.

๐—œ๐˜ ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ปโ€™๐˜.

You still have months in front of you.

And I donโ€™t mean months to run yourself into the ground trying to prove you can finish strong.

I mean time to meet a version of yourself you havenโ€™t met yet.

Maybe she takes her health more seriously.

Maybe she finally stops spending every dollar like another one is guaranteed.

Maybe she prays more than she worries.

Maybe she handles something differently that used to get the best of her.

Maybe she starts saying no without writing a whole paragraph explaining why.

Maybe she laughs more.

Goes somewhere.

Tries something.

Saves something.

Releases something.

Thatโ€™s what I want you to think about today.

Not everything you didnโ€™t accomplish this year.

Not how far behind you think you are.

But what could actually change if you gave the next few months your attention instead of your regret.

Physically.

Mentally.

Emotionally.

Spiritually.

Financially.

You donโ€™t need five huge goals.

I knew we had a busy summer at DREโ€™S, but I did not realize the full impact until I sat down and counted.

๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ–.

From mid-May through August,

Forty-six of them experienced DREโ€™S when we brought our programming to Syracuse University.

That number means more to me than I can put into one post.

So when a family, school, church, or youth program trusts me with their young people, I feel both the honor and the responsibility of that trust.

Some came excited. Some came quiet. Some stood back and watched before deciding if they wanted to participate. Some did not think DREโ€™S would be for them until they experienced it for themselves.

Nobody was forced to tell their whole story or explain every feeling.

Through DREโ€™S experiential rooms and activities, they were given different ways to release, relax, rejuvenate, connect, and RESET.

They screamed.

They moved their bodies and hit punching bags.

They wrote down what they wanted to release and broke plates.

They breathed, rested, reflected, laughed, wrote affirmations, and allowed themselves to just be.

At the same time, they practiced naming what they were feeling, recognizing where stress was showing up in their bodies, identifying safe people, asking for help, choosing coping strategies, grounding themselves, and creating personal RESET plans.

๐ˆ๐ง ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ-๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฒ๐ฌ, youth reported knowing what to do before reacting and being able to identify a safe person they could turn to for support.

Those words matter to me because that is what I want young people to carry with them when they leave DREโ€™S.

It is not just about breaking plates or having fun in the rooms.

It is about giving young people a place to experience their emotions without being judged for having them.

A place to discover that there is more than one way to respond when life feels heavy.

Today is National Overdose Awareness Day...

Sometimes an overdose happens in minutes.

But the people who love that person can carry pieces of that moment for years.

It can be a mother replaying the last conversation, wondering what she missed.

A child trying to understand why someone they loved never came home.

A sibling feeling their stomach drop when another family member does not answer the phone.

A person in recovery trying to move forward while still carrying shame from one of the hardest chapters of their life.

A family loving the same person, grieving the same person, and still not knowing how to talk to one another about what happened.

And sometimes it is simply silence.

Because even in grief, people are still afraid of being judged when they say the word overdose.

There are parts of overdose loss we do not talk about enough.

The unanswered questions.

The guilt.

The anger.

The fear.

The โ€œwhat ifs.โ€

The birthdays that feel different.

The phone calls you still wish you could make.

The moments when something happens and, for a second, you forget they are not there to tell.

And somewhere today, someone is carrying a loss they do not know how to talk about.

If that is you, your grief does not have to look like anyone elseโ€™s.

You can love someone and still be angry.

You can miss them and still have questions.

You can remember the good without pretending the hard parts did not happen.

If you are in recovery, the hardest chapter of your life does not erase your humanity or everything that came before and after it.

If you love someone who is struggling, your fear, exhaustion, love, frustration and hurt matter too.

And if you have ever only seen the overdose and not the person, today is a good day to look again.

Because before the substance, before the diagnosis, before the circumstances and before the way their story ended...

there was a person.

Someone with a laugh.

Someone with people they loved.

Someone with plans.

Someone with mistakes.

Someone with a story much bigger than one moment of their life.

See the person before the circumstance.

Last week we closed The Empty Chair: Until You Know My Story.

The installation ended.

The conversation should not.

Today we remember those who died.

We honor those who survived.

We hold space for the families still carrying the impact.

And we keep reminding people of something stigma too often makes us forget:

Every number had a name.
Every name had a story๐Ÿ’œ

We are honored to share that DREโ€™S Safe Place Founder and Owner, Quinnika, has been named a 2026 Central New York 40 Over 40 Legacy Awards Honoree.

DREโ€™S was never built just to be a business.

It was built from love, grief, and a motherโ€™s decision that her sonโ€™s life would continue to mean something in this world.

Drequanโ€™s name may not be written on this award, but his life is all through it.

It is in every person who has walked through our doors carrying something heavy and left feeling lighter.

It is in every young person learning a healthier way to release what they feel.

It is in every person who found even one moment of relief, hope, strength, or connection inside this space.

DREโ€™S is proof that something born from one of the hardest moments of a life can become something that helps other people make it through theirs.

Thank you to the Central New York 40 Over 40 Legacy Awards for recognizing this work and including Quinnika among this yearโ€™s honorees.

And thank you to every person who has walked through our doors, trusted us, partnered with us, supported us, referred someone to us, or spoken the name DREโ€™S in a room we were not in.

Drequanโ€™s life continues to reach people he never had the chance to meet.

That is bigger than an award.

That is legacy...
