🚧 What’s Up Wednesday: Safety Blind Spots. What Are We Missing? 👀
You walk onto a jobsite and spot a serious hazard in seconds. But what if the person performing the work doesn't even recognize the risk?
Are workers always making a conscious decision to work unsafely, or are we sometimes overlooking a blind spot? 🤔
This week, Brent Knight shares a real jobsite observation that challenges safety professionals to rethink how we approach unsafe behaviors.
⚠️ Recognize and address the immediate hazard.
đź‘€ Don't automatically assume someone is ignoring safety procedures.
đź’¬ Ask questions to understand their perspective.
🤝 Turn observations into coaching opportunities.
🦺 Help workers recognize hazards they may not see.
Sometimes the most effective safety intervention isn't a correction. It's a conversation that changes how someone sees risk.
We all have blind spots. Recognizing them together builds a stronger, more collaborative safety culture.
👇 Let's hear from our safety professionals! What's the most common safety blind spot you encounter in the field?

💚 “A few months back, he might have saved my life.”

ISS’s Jose Hernandez Jr CHST shared those words about equipment operator Telesforo Villarreal Jr., and we want to help share his story.

While Jose was observing work on a construction site, Telesforo spotted a front-end loader approaching Jose from behind with a load in its bucket. He sounded his excavator’s horn and gave Jose the all-stop hand signal, alerting him to a danger he hadn’t seen.

Jose thanked him personally. But a later conversation gave him another reason to recognize Telesforo.

Jose noticed his colorfully decorated hard hat and asked about it. Telesforo explained that his four-year-old daughter, Fernanda, had surprised him by decorating it and insisted he wear it to work. She is one of the reasons he works hard to provide a better life for his family.

That hard hat carries a reminder of someone special at home. Telesforo’s actions remind us why looking out for one another matters so much.

Telesforo, thank you for staying alert, taking action, and caring about the people working around you. And thank you, Jose, for bringing this story to our ISS community.

👏 Help us give Telesforo the recognition he deserves! Share this post with your network to bring his story to more people across the construction community. Let’s celebrate the people who look out for others and help everyone get home safely. 💚

đź‘· Great recruiting starts with understanding the work.

ISS Senior Recruiter Yonas Ambaye recently visited Johnny DeCrecentis, one of our field safety consultants, at a project in Ohio to get a firsthand look at a typical day on site.

The visit offered Yonas a closer look at the skills, judgment, and communication it takes to be an effective owner’s safety representative in a complex construction environment.

For our recruiting team, time in the field brings a job description to life. It’s an opportunity to understand the daily responsibilities, appreciate the challenges, and connect with the people who represent ISS on our clients’ projects.

🤝 Stronger connections. Greater understanding. One ISS team.

Thank you, Johnny, for sharing your time and perspective—and Yonas, for taking the opportunity to learn from our team in the field!

🚧 SAFETY ISN’T JUST WHAT YOU WEAR. IT’S HOW YOU APPROACH THE WORK! 👷‍♂️
A strong safety culture is built through planning, awareness, and doing the right things BEFORE hazards become incidents.
Our ISS Project Safety Consultant, Kendric Williams, captured an excellent example of proactive hazard prevention on a utility excavation project in Michigan!
🔎 Here’s what safety in action looks like:
âś… Engineering Controls: Excavated material is positioned safely away from the edge, while the excavation sides are being benched to help reduce cave-in hazards.
âś… Hazard Awareness: Crew members are actively monitoring excavation depth, staying alert to changing site conditions, and maintaining awareness of moving equipment.
âś… Eyes on the Work: A designated spotter is keeping watch as work progresses, adding another layer of protection.
âś… PPE Compliance: Tradespeople are equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment throughout the operation.
âś… Controlled Access: Although not visible in the photo, barricade tape is in place to prevent unauthorized personnel from entering the active work area.
đź’Ş The bigger picture? Safety isn't one precaution. It's multiple layers of protection working together.
It's encouraging to see crews taking ownership of their surroundings, anticipating potential hazards, and looking out for one another.
👏 Great observation, Kendric! Thank you for highlighting the positive safety practices happening in the field and reinforcing what we believe at ISS: Safety isn't just a priority. It's a responsibility we share.

🚧 What’s Up Wednesday: Workplace Impairment Is More Than Drugs and Alcohol 👀
Would you recognize the warning signs if someone on your jobsite wasn't fit for duty?
Workplace impairment isn't always obvious, and it doesn't always involve drugs or alcohol. Fatigue, illness, heat stress, personal struggles, and burnout can all affect a worker's judgment, awareness, and ability to perform safely. ⚠️
This week, Brent Knight shares a real workplace experience that highlights why paying attention to the people around us can make all the difference.
🔎 Three important warning signs to recognize:
đź‘€ Physical: Unsteady movements, excessive fatigue, or slow reactions
🧠 Behavioral: Sudden mood changes, irritability, or unusual behavior
🚧 Operational: Repeated mistakes, declining work quality, or near misses
These signs don't automatically mean someone is under the influence, but they may signal that something isn't right.
Sometimes the most important safety observation isn't about the jobsite. It's about the person standing next to you. 🤝
đź’¬ We want to hear from you! What's one warning sign of workplace impairment that you think supervisors and safety professionals commonly overlook?

⚡ WHEN A CONSTRUCTION SITE BECOMES AN ENERGIZED ENVIRONMENT, EVERYTHING CHANGES.

Data center construction presents some of the most complex electrical safety challenges in our industry. And as these massive projects move toward commissioning, the risks can escalate dramatically.

So, is understanding NFPA 70E just the electrical contractor's responsibility? Absolutely not.

In our latest blog, Brent Knight, CSP, explains why every safety professional working on data center and advanced technology projects needs a solid understanding of NFPA 70E.

🔹 Beyond the PPE: Electrical safety involves far more than arc-rated clothing. It's about hazard recognition, risk assessments, and effective controls.

🔹 The Energization Shift: Areas that were once conventional construction zones can quickly become operating electrical environments.

🔹 Communication Is Critical: Understanding electrical boundaries, access restrictions, and lockout/tagout procedures helps protect everyone on the jobsite.

🔹 Ask the Right Questions: Before energized work begins, one question could make all the difference: *Does this equipment actually need to remain energized?*

đź’ˇ Here's the takeaway: Safety professionals don't need to be electricians. But they do need the knowledge to recognize electrical hazards, challenge unsafe assumptions, and help ensure that production pressures never compromise worker safety.

At ISS, we believe knowledgeable safety professionals are essential to building safer, more successful projects.
