🐝 Making Transitions Easier for Your Child 🌼
Transitions can be tough! Moving from a favorite activity to something new or less preferred can sometimes bring big feelings and challenging behaviors. The good news? Transitions are a skill that can be taught and practiced. 💛
✨ Try these strategies:
🐝 Give a warning
Let your child know a transition is coming: “5 more minutes, then cleanup.”
🐝 Use visual supports
Pictures, visual schedules, timers, or “First–Then” boards can help make expectations predictable.
🐝 Keep directions simple
Instead of lengthy explanations, try: “All done toys. Shoes on.”
🐝 Offer choices when possible
Give your child some control: “Do you want to walk or hop to the bathroom?”
🐝 Make transitions fun!
Try a transition song, movement game, silly walk, or a favorite phrase to make moving between activities more engaging.
🐝 Reinforce successful transitions
Celebrate the behavior you want to see! “You cleaned up and came right away—great transitioning!”
🐝 Practice when things are calm
Don’t wait for a difficult transition to teach the skill. Practice short, successful transitions throughout the day.
🌼 Remember: The goal isn’t to make every transition happen without resistance. The goal is to build the skills your child needs to move between activities with increasing independence and flexibility.
At Bloom & Bee ABA, we work on transition skills in meaningful, individualized ways—helping children build confidence, flexibility, and independence one transition at a time. 🐝💛
