Dr. Barnes loves metaphors. We hear them often and usually they’ll be on his whiteboard to discuss with patients! “You can’t shoot a canon out of a canoe” can pertain to healing, as well as life in general. From a health standpoint, we don’t want to jump into any rigorous routines when beginning a healing journey. We need to build stability and a firm foundation first. If your sleep, nutrition, and recovery are poor, the likelihood of hurting yourself again is great. Consistent effort leads to great results!

Alright, this question comes up from time to time. While one "right" answer to the question of "This or that?" is hard to come by, I hope this answer satisfies those who are curious! We sell custom orthotics. Barefoot shoes are incredibly popular for a multitude of reasons. Our answer is... ::drumroll::... they're both good! For different reasons 😄

We are a healthcare clinic whose primary goal is to help our patient's achieve optimum health again. Barefoot shoes are an excellent choice for someone who is healthy and is looking to improve strength, mobility, and natural foot mechanics. These are for the feet that can tolerate the increased demand, but should still be transitioned gradually.

Custom orthotics are a therapeutic tool. These are for the feet that are unstable, overworked, or structurally stressed. When foot function is compromised, it can affect balance, walking mechanics, and how forces impact the knees, hips, and back. Our posture becomes less efficient, which leads not only to foot issues, but knee, hips, and (you guessed it!) back issues as well.

Current research has NOT consistently shown that properly prescribed orthotics weaken the feet. In many cases, orthotics can reduce pain and improve function while patients work on strength and mobility.

So, the question shouldn't be "this or that", but instead, what can best support your body? Call our clinic to schedule your foot scan!
