The Allentown Fair, Labor Day and the Memories That Stay With Us

There are certain signs that summer is coming to an end in the Lehigh Valley. The days become a little shorter. Corn and tomatoes fill local farm stands. Families squeeze in one last picnic. And, of course, the Great Allentown Fair returns.

For generations of Lehigh Valley families, the Allentown Fair has been part of the rhythm of late summer. This year, the Fair runs September 2–7, once again bringing together agriculture, food, entertainment, music and familiar traditions at the Allentown Fairgrounds.

For families caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, traditions like these can offer something even more meaningful: an opportunity to connect with memories that may still be surprisingly vivid.

Cars, Nostalgia, and Memory, Part 2: Why the Cars of Our Past Can Help Us Connect with a Loved One Living with Dementia
Ask Dad about what he had for lunch yesterday, and he may struggle to answer.

Ask him about his first car, and you might get an entirely different response.

“It was a ’57 Chevy.”

“Blue with a white top.”

“I bought it used.”

“Your mother and I drove that car everywhere.”

Suddenly, a conversation that had been difficult begins to flow.

For many older adults, automobiles aren’t simply machines. Cars are connected to independence, relationships, work, family vacations, first dates, teenage adventures, and important milestones. For someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, those associations can make classic cars wonderful tools for reminiscence.

Ask many fathers and grandfathers about the cars they owned when they were young, and something remarkable can happen.

A dad who has trouble remembering what happened yesterday may suddenly tell you all about his first Chevrolet. He might remember the color, the engine, what he paid for it, and where he drove it on Saturday nights. He may even remember the car he wished he’d never sold.

For families caring for a father living with dementia, those stories offer more than nostalgia. They provide opportunities to reconnect with the man Dad has always been.

The Wheels of Time Annual Rod & Custom Car Jamboree returns to Macungie Memorial Park August 28–30, 2026. With more than 1,500 custom cars and street rods expected, it can be a wonderful destination for a father or grandfather who has spent a lifetime loving automobiles.

There is something wonderfully nostalgic about a summer picnic.

The smell of hamburgers on the grill. A pitcher of lemonade sweating in the afternoon heat. Potato salad served from a familiar bowl. Watermelon slices on paper plates. Children running through the grass while grandparents sit nearby telling stories.

For a family with a loved one living with dementia, a picnic can be much more than a meal. It can become an opportunity to connect generations, stimulate the senses, encourage reminiscence, and help grandchildren discover stories about Grandma or Grandpa they may never have heard.
