Introduced to wheelchair rugby during his rehabilitation at Craig, Nick found much more than a sport.

“At first glance, wheelchair rugby is just a sport—fast, brutal and chaotic,” Nick says. “But for those of us who roll onto the court, it’s about freedom, community, independence and power. It reminds us that disability does not define us.”

Today, Nick coaches the Denver Barbarians Wheelchair Rugby Club and continues to help others experience the same sense of belonging and purpose that wheelchair rugby brought to his life.

Karen’s family had begun to believe she would never come home after her brain injury.

After months in the ICU and acute care, the Guardado-Solano family was told Karen would likely spend the rest of her life in a nursing home. Then she arrived at Craig Hospital.

“As soon as she arrived, her care team told us that we’d be taking her home at the end of her three-month rehabilitation,” Ashley, Karen’s sister, shares.

At Craig, Karen’s neurorehabilitation focused on progress, independence and preparing her family for life at home together again. Through support from the Craig Foundation’s Going Home Fund, Karen’s family was able to modify their Denver home with an accessible bedroom and bathroom designed to help her return home safely.

Today, Karen is back home surrounded by the family who never stopped believing in her.

“After Karen’s injury, her doctors gave her a slim chance of surviving. But she’s here with us today, and we feel so lucky,” Ashley says.

If you've been a part of Craig Hospital in the last 50 years, there’s a good chance you’ve met Wendy.

This year, Wendy Gordan, MA, CCC-SLP, will celebrate her 50th work anniversary at Craig, marking five decades of service in our Speech-Language Pathology Department, including roles as the team's assistant director and director.

We asked Wendy what she believes has been the greatest impact of speech-language pathology on our patients’ lives at Craig.

Wendy shares, “Early on, speech-language pathologists help many patients return to eating, which is important both nutritionally and socially. Communication is just as critical, whether supporting patients with aphasia or helping them use augmentative communication. When someone cannot communicate, life changes dramatically.

From an outpatient perspective, it’s about helping patients understand what is possible after injury. Identifying strengths, navigating limitations and supporting goals like returning to work or driving. It’s also helping patients adjust to a new normal and recognize that life can still be good.”

We are grateful for Wendy’s five decades of expertise, leadership and steady commitment to our patients and the Speech Department. Thank you, Wendy, for all you have given to Craig and the people we serve. 💙

We’re excited to share that Craig Hospital has been named a winner of the 2026 USA TODAY Top Workplaces and Denver Post Top Workplaces.

This Memorial Day, Craig Hospital’s Operation TBI Freedom (OTF) team will have the distinct honor of participating in the wreath-laying ceremony representing each branch of the United States Armed Forces. This solemn tradition serves as a powerful reminder that the sacrifices of those in our military will never be forgotten.

For OTF, this ceremony is deeply personal. Many on our team have worn the uniform and continue serving veterans, active-duty service members and their families every day through Craig Hospital’s Military Programs. Standing alongside fellow veterans and community partners, we are proud to help honor the legacy, sacrifice and service of those who gave their lives for our nation.

This Memorial Day, we encourage everyone to pause, reflect and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms.

After his stroke, JJ spent 20 days in intensive care. At times, his family did not know what recovery would look like.

When JJ arrived at Craig Hospital for neurorehabilitation, he was unable to speak because of aphasia caused by his stroke. Through PT, OT, speech therapy, the CHAT Program, the support of his wife, Ashley, and his own steady determination, JJ began rebuilding his independence and finding new ways to communicate.

As we recognize Stroke Awareness Month, it's important to know the warning signs of stroke and act quickly using the BE FAST method:

B: Balance loss
E: Eye (vision) changes
F: Face drooping
A: Arm weakness
S: Speech difficulty
T: Time to call 911

This spring, more than 25 Craig grads from across the country are expected to graduate from high school.

These students spent time at Craig for neurorehabilitation at some point during their high school careers and returned to their school through a transition carefully planned by Craig teachers, the student, and the student’s family and school staff.

In most cases, Craig students graduate on time with their friends!

As part of this work, we are pleased to welcome our newest teacher, Kaitlin Wanberg, who joined the School Program in April and will be working alongside High School Program Coordinator Laura Magnuson, M. Ed.

Kaitlin is a CU Boulder graduate who brings both classroom and international experience to Craig. We’re glad to have her on the team. Welcome to Craig, Kaitlin!

Hospital Week is a chance to celebrate the people who make Craig what it is.

From direct patient care to the many roles that support our hospital, our staff bring expertise, collaboration and compassion to their work every day.

Between caring for patients with brain injury, being a mother of two and continuing her own education, Lindsey, Craig Hospital neuropsychologist, understands the importance of caring for her own mental health.

And for her, one way that care comes through is with creativity, crafting gemstone necklaces and bracelets.

“One day, I noticed feeling like ‘I’m a mom and a neuropsychologist,’ and I wanted to have something for myself too, something creative. Every part of it has been so much fun for me, and it’s given me this really creative outlet that’s been healing and therapeutic.”

Lindsey has been at Craig since 2020 and appreciates how psychology is integrated as a critical part of each care team, supporting the patient, family members and team.

"Craig's mission-driven model really helps me bring my skill and expertise to treat patients in different ways that impact their sense of self after injury. I get to bring my whole self to treat patients and their families."

As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, Lindsey’s perspective is a reminder that mental health matters for everyone. Whether you work in health care, live with a brain injury or spinal cord injury, or support a loved one, making space for your own mental well-being is essential.
