What does urology have to do with neurorehabilitation? Quite a lot.

For many Craig patients, learning how to manage their bladder is an important part of preparing for life at home. And behind that care is a team of urology nurses and rehab techs with specialized knowledge to help patients and families navigate it.

This team goes well beyond procedures. They help patients understand their bladder management options, teach hands-on skills like suprapubic catheter care and provide additional training when patients or families need more support before heading home.

It’s specialized care, but it’s also practical. The goal is to help patients and families feel more confident managing these needs in everyday life.

During , we’re giving a well-deserved shoutout to the nurses and rehab techs who bring their expertise, patience and care to this work every day!

Riding horses has been part of Jeramiah’s life since he was four years old, and his love of rodeo eventually led him to roping and bull riding.

As a teenager, he became a rodeo bullfighter, protecting fallen riders by distracting the bull. In 2016, while doing just that, Jeramiah was charged and trampled by a bull, sustaining a C5-C6 spinal cord injury at 17 years old.

He spent the next four months at Craig for SCI neurorehabilitation before returning home and finding ways to stay connected to the rodeo world he loved. Ten years later, that connection came full circle.

Jeramiah brought his friends, family and rodeo community together earlier this year for their first annual barrel-racing fundraiser that raised $2,000 for Craig!

“Giving back to Craig is very important to me,” Jeramiah says. “It’s a heart-to-heart thing. Craig was there for me when I needed to rebuild my life, and I want to help other patients in that same situation.”

Are you or someone you know working in caregiving and looking for specialized training?

Craig Hospital is offering a free, 1.5-day course this October for community members and agency employees who provide care for individuals with spinal cord or brain injuries. Over the course of two days, participants will gain practical care partner skills, learn foundational knowledge from Craig experts, and receive a certificate of attendance, printed course booklet and access to online resources.

College is a big transition for anyone, and Ben is taking his about 800 miles from home!

This semester, the 20-year-old is starting his freshman year at Benedictine College in Kansas. Knowing he wanted to go away for college, and after exploring several schools with his family, Benedictine felt like the right fit for him.

After sustaining a C5-C6 spinal cord injury due to a fall in 2022, Ben came to Craig for his SCI neurorehabilitation. As he prepared to live on his own in a power wheelchair, there was a lot to consider before heading to campus this year.

Ben worked with Craig’s donor-supported Community Reintegration team to plan for an accessible dorm room, classroom accommodations, caregivers, an emergency plan and access to the buildings, and resources he’ll need on campus.

When asked about this new adventure, Ben says he is proud of himself for leaving home: “I think it’s important to get out of your comfort zone and try new things, even if they feel scary.”

Oh how we glowed!

Last weekend, nearly 300 participants came together to walk, run and roll at our first-ever Glow & Roll event, raising more than $140,000 in support of Craig Hospital patients and programs.

It was an evening full of inspiration, movement and celebratory vibes as we featured all the ways the Craig community moves around the beautiful Johnson Reservoir. We can’t wait to do it again next year!

This adaptive mobility expo is designed to help you explore what getting behind the wheel could look like for you.

What a wonderful day at Craig's 8th annual Living Well With Brain Injury event last week!

This year’s theme, “Connecting Pieces: The Art of Thriving!”, brought together 105 brain injury survivors and care partners for a day of connection, learning, creativity and community.

Throughout the day, attendees heard keynote presentations from Eric Spier, MD; Sarah Adelman; and Jandel Allen-Davis, MD, and participated in breakout groups and activities. They also had the opportunity to meet with and learn about more than 20 community resources.

A special thank you to our panelists, Café 180, animal-assisted therapy teams, Craig Hospital volunteers, peer mentors and the talented interdisciplinary team led by Karen Rasavage who helped make this event possible.

This August, Blake Holst packed up for Nashville and started a new chapter four years in the making: law school at Vanderbilt University.

In 2022, Blake was a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin when a pool accident left him with a T10 spinal cord injury.

Determined to continue his education, Blake stayed in Colorado to give therapy his full attention while completing his UT Austin classes remotely. He participated in physical therapy 3-4 days a week, spent nearly every day at the PEAK Center, and continued his coursework while studying for the LSAT. Four years later, he graduated from UT Austin!

Craig's donor-supported Alumni Education Scholarship helped ease the financial pressure of Blake's undergraduate tuition, and this summer, he received a second scholarship as he prepared to take the next step at Vanderbilt.

“There is no question that I am nervous about a lot—leaving home in a wheelchair, saying goodbye to the strong connections I’ve built at Craig, and living alone in a new city. But I have been working so hard over the past four years to make this a reality. And thanks to Craig, I’m ready to start this new journey. I know it’s going to be great.”
