Every Tuesday, Rey spends the day volunteering at Craig across departments like Music Therapy and Rehab Engineering.

“It’s not so easy to completely stop doing the work you love,” says Rey, who retired after 33 years as an occupational therapist.

He's helped our Music Therapy team build devices that let individuals with limited hand function strum a ukulele and has worked with the Rehab Engineering team to provide custom equipment for patients, like these parts for sip-and-puff equipment that allows those with limited upper body movement to call their nursing teams.

The engineers bring the prototypes, with the help of a donor-supported 3D printer, and Rey brings years of knowing how patients will actually use them. "He can wear his OT hat, while we wear our engineering hats," says Jeremy, a Craig rehab engineer. "It's a good yin and yang."

"There is nothing better than helping patients get back to life," Rey says. "I feel lucky that I can still be part of that joy."

Every August, Whitney and her family celebrate her "Alive Day."

A decade ago, Whitney sustained a traumatic brain injury in a motorcycle crash. This year, she and her family returned to Craig to mark the 10-year anniversary of her injury and say thank you to the people who made an impact on them, including her recreational, speech, physical and occupational therapists, and the police officer who worked on Whitney’s 2016 case in Denver.

Today, Whitney lives independently in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, with her brother. She's back to driving; serves as a church leader; works in human resources for a nonprofit that empowers individuals with intellectual, developmental and cognitive disabilities; and trains at the gym five days a week.

In 1973, Doug began his neurorehabilitation journey at Craig as a 16-year-old with a room overlooking the Colorado mountains.

"He used to compare his therapy sessions to climbing that mountain," remembers Angie, Doug's widow. "It was motivation for giving it his all every day."

Doug lived with a spinal cord injury for 51 years: a 29-year career in finance, a proposal to Angie at the same lake where he was injured, and a return to Craig every year, right up until his passing in 2024.

He gave back to Craig in every way he could, including a gift from his estate. “Being able to donate part of his estate to Craig made him very happy,” Angie says. Now a patient room in Craig's West Building will carry his name, with the mountain view out the window.

It's National Healthcare Quality Week, and this is the team behind the standard.

Craig's Quality team spends every day on one question: how do we make care safer and better for individuals with spinal cord and brain injury? This year alone, that meant patient safety initiatives, stronger communication between care teams, and a slate of quality improvement projects built in partnership with departments across the hospital.

Paw prints, wagging tails, and a blessing for each of them. 🐾

Last week, Craig Chaplains Candi and Jason led our annual Pet Blessing, a tradition since 2011 that celebrates the therapy animals who bring comfort and joy to our patients, families and staff.

During , we want to take a moment to celebrate the two people behind the blessings. Candi and Jason come alongside our patients and families through the hardest days and the proudest ones, and they do it with the same warmth they bring to this event every year.

Thank you, Candi and Jason, for the compassion, presence and care you share so generously with the Craig community every day.

How will someone recover after a spinal cord injury? So far, this question has been difficult to answer with any certainty.

Craig Hospital’s Andrew Park, MD, and R. James Cotton, MD, PhD, of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab are taking it on. Their project was just selected for a newly established AI Project Grant from Wings for Life, a nonprofit spinal cord research foundation.

Throughout inpatient rehabilitation, the team will capture how individuals with spinal cord injury move, recorded via smartphone, and then use AI to analyze that data alongside spinal MRI scans. The goal: models that better predict recovery after SCI, so care and clinical trials can be planned with more confidence.

When Edilio Flores had a major stroke while practicing jiu-jitsu in 2022, he and his wife, Rebecca Loesch, turned to Craig Hospital for care, support and hope. Craig became part of their healing journey and helped them find strength in recovery, in each other and in the community around them. Now, Edilio and Rebecca are giving back by sharing their story through Pedal 4 Possible and Glow & Roll, inspiring others to celebrate movement, possibility and the life-changing care that begins at Craig.

“I think of my memory as a slice of Swiss cheese—there are numerous holes. I don’t know how large or small the holes are … I just know there are holes.”

That’s Elizabeth, who sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) when she was thrown from her horse in July 2022.

“When I awoke from my 36-day coma, I didn’t know what a TBI was. I also didn’t remember who I was.” After a month in a Los Angeles trauma hospital, she transferred to Craig for brain injury neurorehabilitation. “I rebuilt myself after relearning everything, including how to use a fork and how to walk.”

Today, Elizabeth is navigating life with an invisible injury. She wears an eye patch to drive due to double vision, carries earplugs everywhere and focuses on one thing at a time to maintain a sense of calm in sensory overloaded situations. Despite these challenges, Elizabeth emphasizes, “I have a brain injury, not a mindset injury ... My accident awakened my true self, and I don’t compare myself to who I used to be. I am so much bigger, so much more.”
