Safety excellence isn't measured by the absence of injuries alone.

It's measured by the presence of leadership, accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.

The best organizations don't wait for problems before taking action. They don't view safety as a department or a monthly meeting. They make safety part of every conversation, every decision, and every level of their organization.

So, what does safety excellence actually look like?

We tend to measure safety by what happened—recordable injuries, lost-time incidents, OSHA citations, or workers' compensation claims. We recognize teams for reaching milestones like "100 days without an injury."

Those achievements are worth celebrating.

But what about the countless incidents that never made the report because someone prevented them?

Click below to read our full article and let's celebrate those little victories that help make sure people get home safe at the end of each day!

When was the last time you celebrated an injury that never occurred? It sounds like a strange question. After all, we tend to measure safety by what happened—recordable injuries, lost-time incidents, OSHA citations, or workers' compensation claims.

How do you know if your safety program is working?

For many organizations, the answer comes from looking at injury rates, OSHA recordables, lost-time incidents, or workers' compensation claims. While these metrics are important, they all have one thing in common—they tell you what has already happened.

These are called lagging indicators because they measure the results of past performance.

The challenge is that by the time a lagging indicator changes, someone may have already been injured.

When someone asks, "Are we OSHA compliant?" they're asking an important question—but not the most important one.

OSHA compliance establishes the minimum standard for workplace safety. It creates a foundation that every employer should meet. But history has shown us that companies can be fully compliant and still experience serious injuries, life-altering incidents, or even fatalities.

Why?

Because regulations can't replace leadership. Checklists can't create accountability. Policies alone don't change behavior. And compliance, by itself, doesn't build a culture where every employee takes ownership of safety.

The safest organizations understand that preventing injuries requires more than meeting regulatory requirements. It requires a commitment to continuous improvement.
