Stop telling your anxious child to “just make friends.”

For a child who already feels like they don’t belong,
“Just go talk to someone” can feel impossible.

Instead, teach them to take tiny social risks.

Say hi.
Sit next to someone.
Ask one question.
Join for five minutes.
Try again tomorrow.

The goal isn’t to make your child popular.

The goal is to teach them:

“I don’t have to feel confident to connect with someone.”

Because sometimes confidence doesn’t come before the brave thing.

Sometimes confidence is created by doing the brave thing.

If you have a child with anxiety, I know you’re asking yourself this question every single day. So I’m gonna teach you something that will help you stop that vicious cycle. So the big question you’re asking yourself is: Is this normal or is this anxiety? Is he just gonna— Or she gonna outgrow this or do I have to teach them something? So let’s talk about the difference between stress, worry and fear and anxiety. Stress, worry and fear are those normal things that our children deal with, right? Nervous about the first day of school, nerv-nervous about, uh, meeting new friends. Okay? Normal stuff they’re gonna feel and it feels exactly like anxiety. Same body emotions. Anxiety is when it takes that stress, worry and fear and multiplies it by ten hundred or a thousand or it tells us things that are an absolute lie and not true. It is important to recognize the two because there is a difference in how we handle it. Stress, worry and fear, there’s something we can do about it. We give our kids some applicable steps where anxiety we have to learn to sit in it— Sit in it and accept it. All right. Take care

How do I know if my child needs counseling? The shortened version. It never hurts to ask. Most counselors will do a free assessment, and give you advice on the best course of action. Hope this helps!

Reassurance.
Avoidance.
Accommodation. They may seem like helpful ways to help your child, but in reality it’s feeding the anxiety beast! 👹
