Nurturing Selves opened in January 2023 to provide the highest quality evidence-based and trauma-informed therapeutic services to children, age 12 months to 18 years, their parents/caregivers, and their families. I use and teach brain-based, bottom-up practices, backed by the latest neuroscience research, to help with emotional regulation, social interactions, academic performance, and decision-making.

In 2025, Nurturing Selves incorporated and expanded services to reach more adolescents and adults with age-appropriate play therapy. We created a new facility “Where Healing Play Happens” to expand our services to adolescents and adults in a fun, playful, and stress-reducing atmosphere. Therapy doesn’t have to be boring to be effective!

If you could ask Paula anything, what would it be?

Introducing our new therapy group!

This group was created for mothers who may be seeking a sense of community, connection, and support while navigating the joys and challenges of motherhood.

Our ultimate goal is to create a welcoming and supportive space where *single* Moms can connect with others who may share similar experiences, build meaningful relationships, and learn practical therapeutic skills that they can incorporate into their everyday lives; as well as share with their children.

Throughout this 8-week group, we will explore topics like emotional awareness and regulation, self-care tips and strategies, navigating and reframing "mom guilt", identifying community resources, and even developing and sharing simple, creative meal-prep ideas. Together, we will focus on building skills, sharing experiences, and exploring new ways to care for ourselves and our children.

Your children are welcome to attend! We completely understand that finding childcare can be a challenging barrier to finding time for yourself, and we want to make this group as accessible as possible for you.

Details:
- This group will go on for 8 weeks, meeting bi-weekly on Saturday mornings, at 11:30AM.
- The start date is designated as Saturday, December 12th, of 2026.

You deserve community, care, and support. We look forward to creating this space where you can feel seen, supported, encouraged, and reminded that you do not have to navigate this alone.

Please feel free to share this to friends and family, as many could use this resource.

Introducing our third featured banned book...

Charlotte's Web by E.B. White, Illustrated by Garth Williams.

Charlotte's Web was BANNED in the U.S. in 2006 mainly due to the novel’s candid treatment of animals.
The main objection was that Charlotte the spider and the other animals talk, think, and communicate like humans.
Some objectors considered this to be contrary to their religious beliefs and described the portrayal of animals with human abilities as disrespectful to God or sacrilegious.

Check out our copy of Charlotte’s Web in our BANNED book section of the Nurturing Selves library!

Did you know that we offer Adult Sessions?
These sessions are catered for when you need someone to guide your own healing journey.

Expressive play therapy isn't just for children, it can help reach areas of trauma or pain that talk therapy just can't get to. You don't have to know where to begin, and you don't have to have all the answers. Sometimes, healing starts with simply showing up, getting creative, and giving yourself permission to explore. You might even discover a new hobby along the way!

"So many broken children, living in grown bodies, mimicking adult lives." - Ijeoma Umebinyuo

Hey, Parents! Have you taken the time to play today?

Play is one of the most powerful ways that you can connect with your child - but sometimes the idea of this can be overwhelming or foreign.

You may not have known, but we offer Parent-specific sessions, so that we can provide you with support in improving your relationship with your child or family. These sessions are designed to help you learn how to engage with your child through play, strengthen your bond, and build confidence in supporting your child’s development.

"At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child's success is the positive involvement of the parents." - Jane D. Hull

Introducing our second featured banned book....
“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis

The book The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe was BANNED across the U.S. in 1990 mainly due to the book’s candid treatment of the Occult and Mysticism: Critics and some religious groups argued that the fantasy elements, witchcraft, and magical creatures promote the occult, paganism, or Wicca, missing or rejecting the Christian undertones.

Graphic Violence: Portions of the series—particularly battle scenes and descriptions in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe—have been targeted for depicting violence and gore unsuited for younger readers.

Behavioral Concerns: Some objectors claimed the books promote rebelliousness or unruly behavior in children.

Religious Confusion: Ironically, while Lewis wrote the books to mirror Christian theology, some conservative Christian groups later challenged the series fearing it introduced unbiblical magical elements or confused young readers.

Aaron one of our amazing new interns here at Nurturing Selves, is exploring the idea of conducting science experiments and connecting therapeutic values to these experiments. The goal is to make science and healing fun and engaging!

We are looking for feedback based on what days, times, and interests there are for this. Filling out this survey will help us know what our groups could look like, what experiments are interesting, and what therapeutic values are bringing interest to our community.

Expressive Play Therapy.
“You learn more about a person in an hour of play than in a lifetime of conversation” - Plato

Our office spaces are carefully designed, specifically tailored to allow healing interactions between the therapist and your child, allowing the child to use the toys and their play to tell their story and identify healthy ways to interact in their world.

As an example, children are often more comfortable talking with or to a puppet about difficult or stressful experiences. At Nurturing Selves, we offer a large variety of high quality puppets as well as simple puppets from socks or spoons that the child can create themselves, to use as a "safe" method of communicating, or build confidence in sharing with others.

What story do you think Geoff, our halloween mascot has to share?

Did you know that October 4th-10th is deemed Banned Book Week by the American Library Association?

We have decided to display some of our collection of banned books throughout the month of October!

Our First Banned Book of the Week....

Where’s Waldo?
The Book Where’s Waldo was BANNED in the U.S. beginning locally in 1989 in Saginaw, Michigan. Where’s Waldo? by Martin Handford was challenged and BANNED from U.S. schools and libraries in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
In 1989, in Saginaw, Michigan: The book was challenged at the Saginaw Public Libraries because of a tiny illustration considered inappropriate.
In 1993, in East Hampton, New York: A school library removed the book after a parent complained about a tiny topless woman sunbathing in the “On the Beach” illustration. The woman was only a very small figure among hundreds of characters in the illustrated scene.
The concern was primarily nudity and sexual content. The controversy became significant enough that Where’s Waldo? appeared on the American Library Association's list of the 100 most frequently BANNED books of the 1990s.
In 1997, a revised, special edition changed the illustration so that the topless woman was wearing a bikini top.
