Miss Fistulina became camera-ready to share some important information with our clinic. She wants you to know that monitoring fluid intake is crucial because failing kidneys can no longer properly filter excess water from the body. Limiting fluids prevents dangerous fluid overload, which protects your heart, lungs, and blood pressure, and ensures your dialysis treatments remain comfortable and effective.

Excess fluid accumulation between treatments directly causes several severe health issues, including:

Heart strain: Extra fluid increases blood pressure and forces the heart to work harder, which can lead to long-term heart damage.
Breathing difficulties: Fluid can build up in your lungs (pulmonary congestion), causing shortness of breath.
Severe swelling: Excess water pools in your face, hands, abdomen, and ankles (edema).
Uncomfortable dialysis sessions: Having to remove too much accumulated fluid during a single treatment session often results in painful cramping, sudden drops in blood pressure, dizziness, and nausea

Our Home Program here in Frankfort is growing now that we have both home treatment modalities to offer our patients. If you’d like more information about our Home Program, please let the staff know!

At DCI, our goal is to help you live your best life with kidney disease, including maintaining independence and flexibility through home dialysis.

Pennsylvania patient Barry shares how home dialysis on his schedule keeps him working and doing what he loves – capturing the best plays on the sidelines as an NFL and collegiate sports photojournalist.

Curious about home dialysis? Ask your health team if it’s an option for you!

Have you ever wondered why you get cold while getting your hemodialysis treatment? Miss Fistulina would like you to know that it’s very common, affecting up to 70% of our patients. It is primarily caused by dialysate cooling (fluid used to filter your blood is often set to a slightly lower temperature to stabilize your blood pressure). Anemia can also be a major factor, as fewer red blood cells result in reduced heat and oxygen circulation.
She strongly encourages all of our patients to wear warm clothing that provides a visible/easy access to your fistula, graft, or catheter to make sure you stay warm during your treatment.
