GLP medications are getting a LOT of attention for weight loss—but the research is showing that their potential health benefits may go far beyond the number on the scale. 👏

❤️ HEART HEALTH
In people with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease, semaglutide reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events—including heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death—by about 20% relative to placebo.

⚖️ SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT LOSS
In a major clinical trial, adults taking semaglutide 2.4 mg lost an average of about 15% of their starting body weight over 68 weeks. Other GLP-1/GIP therapies have demonstrated even greater average reductions in some trials.

🩸 BETTER METABOLIC HEALTH
Research has demonstrated improvements in blood sugar regulation, waist circumference, blood pressure, inflammatory markers and lipid levels alongside weight loss.

🫀 CHOLESTEROL & CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS
Clinical trials have shown improvements in triglycerides and other lipid measures, along with several cardiovascular risk factors.

🦵 JOINT PAIN & MOBILITY
In adults with obesity and knee osteoarthritis, semaglutide produced greater improvements in knee pain and physical function than placebo.

🧬 CANCER RISK — AN EXCITING AREA OF RESEARCH
Emerging observational research has found GLP-1 use associated with lower rates of several obesity-related cancers in certain populations.

This is exciting—but association does NOT prove that GLPs prevent cancer. More research is needed.

The takeaway?

GLPs aren’t simply about getting skinny.

For the right person, they can be one tool in a bigger strategy aimed at improving metabolic health, reducing excess body fat, maintaining muscle and building a healthier body for the long haul.

And the medication is only part of the equation:
