Matthew David Oxyer, 51, of Cheshire, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in Holzer Emergency Department, Pomeroy, Ohio. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, October 17, 1974, he was the son of Thomas (Kathy) Oxyer, Leesburg, Florida and the late Barbara Brinkmeyer Kennedy.
Matthew worked as an over-the-road truck driver, which he truly enjoyed. He spent his time hunting, fishing and being outdoors. He had a passion for riding ATV’s, dirt track racing and spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his father, he leaves behind his wife, Bethany Bass Oxyer, Racine, Ohio; children: Lindsey (Alan) Mount and Colten Oxyer, both of Gallipolis, Ohio; grandsons, Eli and Leon Mount; cousin and close friend, Kyle Oxyer as well as several cousins and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his mother and his brother, Luke Oxyer.
A Gathering of Friends will be announced at the convenience of the family. Cremation services are under the direction of the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, Gallipolis, Ohio.

Robert Irvin “Bob” Freyberg, 75, of Bidwell, Ohio, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2026, in the Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis. He was born March 21, 1951, in Hamilton, Ohio, son of the late Robert William Freyberg and Jacqueline (Roettger) Freyberg. Robert retired from AEP following 30 years of employment. He was a member of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution and St. Louis Catholic Church, Gallipolis.
Robert is survived by his sister, Tari (Steve) Patterson, Columbia, South Carolina and brother, Ron (Carolyn) Freyberg, Liberty Township, Ohio; nieces and nephews, Andy (Sara) Patterson, Katie (Leroy) Green, Rachel Freyberg, Emily (Evan) Cook, Jake Freyberg and several extended family members.
In addition to his parents Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Yolande Sue (Smith) Freyberg, on January 25, 2019 and son, Christopher Daniel Freyberg.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, August 15, 2026, in the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, Gallipolis, with Father Hamm officiating. Private burial will follow at a later date, in the Vinton Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Torona Hash, 67, of Vinton, Ohio, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2026, following a lengthy illness in Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis, Ohio. The daughter of the late Darus and Jewel (Patton) Scragg, she was born in Charleston, West Virginia, August 6, 1958.

Torona leaves behind her sons, Jason (Jamie) Burdette, Jackson, Ohio; Jarrod (Pinky) Hash, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Zachary (Kristina) Stanley, Athalia, Ohio; grandchildren: Blake Burdette, Haiden (Haleigh) Burdette, Kayla (Logan) Browning, Jared Sharp, Colin Sharp, Kaori Kashiwebara, Kirsten Hash, Langdon Hash, Brycen Stanley, Zayla Stanley, Zoey Stanley, Avery Hatfield, Samuel Hatfield; seven great-grandchildren and sister, Priscilla Neville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded by brother, William “Bill” Patton.

James S. “Jim” Vinson, 80, of Seneca, South Carolina, formerly of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Palmetto, Florida, where he made his home for more than 15 years, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026.

Born on September 26, 1945, in Logan County, West Virginia, Jim was the son of the late Winfield Scott Vinson. On October 1, 1966, he married the love of his life, Amy Saunders Vinson, who preceded him in death on April 23, 2007.

A 1963 graduate of North Gallia High School, Jim proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he and Amy lived in Arlington, Va. and Orlando, Florida before returning to Gallia County where he started a long career at the General James M. Gavin Power Plant in Cheshire, Ohio, retiring in 2006. He was also a devoted member of Vinton F&AM Lodge No. 131.
Jim frequently made anonymous donations to organizations and individuals in need, never seeking recognition for his kindness. To those who knew and loved him, Jim was simply the “fixer of all things.” A gifted self-taught carpenter and craftsman, he seemed able to repair or build almost anything and generously shared his talents with family, friends, and neighbors. He found great joy in gardening and cultivating fruit trees, even growing banana trees in Florida, and sharing with those around him.

Jim is survived by his children, Brian Vinson of Seneca, South Carolina, Chris (Roseann) Vinson of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Beth (Jared) Moore of Bidwell, Ohio; his grandchildren, Samantha “Sammie” Dianne Vinson, Chloe Sue Vinson, Kristine Rose Vinson, Broderick Jared Moore, and Avery Jaya Moore; his cousin, Kaye Kuzell, along with other cherished cousins; his companion in his later years, Faye Catania and his dear friend, Richard Clark.

In addition to his beloved wife, Amy, Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, and his sister.

Graveside services will be held Friday, July 24, 2026, at 1:00 PM, in the Ohio Valley Memory Gardens, with Full Military Honors presented by the Gallia County Veterans Funeral Detail.

Rose Lawson, 97, of Bidwell, Ohio and formerly of Vinton, passed away Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Holzer Senior Care, Bidwell, Ohio. She was born May 28, 1929, in Clifford, Kentucky, daughter of the late Ray and Ardith (Chapman) Salmons. Rose was a Social Member of VFW Post 4464 of Gallipolis, a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 27, Gallipolis and attended White Oak Baptist Church, Bidwell.

Don C. Lawson, 92, Pleasantville, Ohio passed away Thursday, July 9, 2026, at his residence. He was born in Norma, Tennessee on December 11, 1933, to the late Mike and Florence (Jeffers) Lawson. Don married Evalou (Marcum) Lawson on June 29, 1957, who preceded him in death on October 30, 2022. He was a member of Little Ruth Old Regular Baptist Church in Merengo, Ohio.

Those left to cherish his memory are their children, Dianne (Lee) Lawson, Rockwood, Tennessee, Rick (Dianna) Lawson, Carroll, Ohio, Pamela (Paul) Shaeffer, Brian (Lori) Lawson, Shawn (Vickie) Lawson and Kimberly (Patrick) Thompson, all of Lancaster, Ohio; sister, Ada (Berkey) Marcum, Oneida, Tennessee; fifteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, as well as a host of extended family members and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, Don was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandy Houck, grandson, Dustin Shaeffer, one sister and four brothers.

Caroll K. Snowden, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, businessman, community leader, and friend to generations of families throughout Gallipolis, entered his heavenly home peacefully on July 9, 2026, at the age of 94, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on August 11, 1931, in Rutland, Ohio, Caroll was the son of Roy and Reva Snowden. He lived a remarkable life defined by integrity, generosity, hard work, unwavering devotion to his family, and a genuine love for people. He never met a stranger and had a remarkable gift for making everyone he met feel welcome.
Caroll was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Verna Jean Snowden (Osborne); his son, Larry Snowden; his parents, Roy and Reva Snowden; and his siblings, Leland Snowden, Jean Parker, and Phyllis Simpkins.
He is survived by his children, Stephen Snowden and Sharon (Taylor); Gary Snowden and Sherry (Van D**e); daughter-in-law Suzelle Snowden, widow of Larry Snowden; Carol Annette Snowden and fiancé Randy Weissenhofer; and Marc Hardway and Kay.
He was a proud grandfather to Michael and Ashley Snowden; Jonathan and Roni Snowden; Cassie Binkley; Chad Snowden; Jimmy and Jane Snowden; Christopher and Kelli Snowden; Eric and Katelyn Snowden; Cole and Katie (Kurth) Snowden; Dayton and Kaetlyn Hardway; and Brittany Sparling and her husband, Jerrod. He also leaves cherished great-grandchildren, his sister Joan May and husband Bruce, nieces, nephews, extended family, and many dear friends.
Caroll began his career with National Life & Accident Insurance Company. In 1962, he became the first State Farm agent in the Gallipolis area when he opened his agency, proudly serving the community until his retirement in 1997. Throughout his career he earned numerous honors, including State Farm's Legion of Honor and the Crystal Excellence Award, and qualified for State Farm incentive travel for more than 20 years. Even years after retirement, former policyholders continued to stop him around town to shake his hand, share a story, or simply thank him. One of Caroll's greatest professional legacies was inspiring all four of his children to begin their careers as State Farm agents. More than following his profession, they followed his example.
Caroll's love for Gallipolis inspired a lifetime of civic involvement and community service. He served as a Gallipolis City Commissioner, was a member and past president of the Gallipolis Kiwanis Club, a member of the Gallipolis Elks Lodge, was honored as a Kentucky Colonel, and founded the Gallipolis River Recreation Festival.
Throughout his life, Caroll was a member of the Church of Christ in Rutland, Ohio. His Christian faith was reflected in the kindness, humility, integrity, generosity, and compassion he showed to others each day.
Caroll embraced life with enthusiasm. He played golf nearly every day until age 92, won numerous tournaments, and recorded two hole-in-ones. He loved caring for his yard, was a loyal Cincinnati Bengals season ticket holder and an enthusiastic supporter of Marshall University Thundering Herd football, and treasured watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed hitting jackpots over the years and loved telling the story of appearing on The Price Is Right in New York during the early 1960s.
More than any hobby or accomplishment, Caroll loved people. Whether enjoying dinner at Bob Evans, sharing a meal at Pizza Hut, catching up with old friends, or striking up a conversation with someone new, he made people feel important. His warm smile, humor, and endless stories left a lasting impression.
If you were lucky enough to know Caroll, chances are you also knew one of his stories. His life was well lived, his legacy is enduring, and he will be deeply missed by his family, his many friends, and the generations of families throughout Gallipolis whose lives he touched.

Donnie Ray Gilbert, 69, of Thurman, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.
A mechanic by trade, he had a passion for classic cars, especially the Ford Fairlane and Mustang. He was an enthusist of the 1960’s and the music and movies of that era. His favorite time was spent tinkering around the house while assigning chores to his grandchildren. The past several years he loved spending time with his wife and their pet dog Sylvie and sharing stories with family and friends.
Donnie was very proud of being one of the longest living kidney transplant recipients at forty years and was very thankful for the gift of life he received that shaped his and his family’s future.
Donnie loved and cared for his family more than anything including the great love of his wife Tenna Gilbert, Thurman, Ohio and their children: Dawn (Bradley) Belville, Albany, Ohio; Jennifer (Carl) DeWitt, Vinton, Ohio and Cory (Adrian) Gilbert, Athens, Ohio; grandchildren: Nathan Belville, Lancaster, Ohio; Alexis Belville, Albany, Ohio; Kaleb DeWitt, Sevierville, Tennessee and Evan DeWitt, Vinton, Ohio; mother-in-law, Darlene Shortridge, Thurman, Ohio and many close family members and friends.
He was preceded by his father Homer Gilbert, father-in-law, Harold Shortridge, and several of his brothers and close family.

Larry Dale Terry, 75, of Vinton, Ohio, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2026, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia. Larry was born August 1, 1950, son of the late Cecil and Grace (Spears) Terry, at Oak Hill, Ohio. He retired from Federal Mogul/GKN and enjoyed playing music on his guitar. Most of all, he loved his family and his grandchildren were the light of his life.
Larry married Shirley Osborne Terry September 26, 1970 at Thurman, Ohio, and she survives with their children: Amy (Patrick) Kelly, Gallipolis, Ohio and Leland Terry and Michael Terry, both of Vinton; grandchildren: Rebecca Wright, Daniel Walker, Zachary Terry, Dakota Terry, Emily Terry, Tyler Angus, Whitney Vilfer, Hunter Terry, Ryan Terry, Ember Wicker, Savannah Wicker and Alliandra Wicker.
Also surviving are thirteen great-grandchildren and brothers and sisters: Mary Cox, Jimmy (Sue) Terry, Pamela Lane, Gracie (Mike) Broyles, Billy (Lisa) Terry and Diana (Dave) Somerville as well as a host of other extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by daughter, Angela Wicker, sisters Rosalie Shoemaker, Ruby Viola Johnson, Annabell Seagraves and infant Linda Lou Terry as well as brothers, Samuel Terry and Cecil Terry.
