While the rest of the country celebrates PRIDE in June, Grand Forks intentionally holds its PRIDE celebration later in the year to make sure the UND community can be part of it. This inclusivity is what PRIDE actually looks like, showing up for people on their timeline, not yours.

We'll be there when it happens but until then, affirming care doesn't take a season off.

We don't believe affirming care is a specialty to list. It's a day-in and out, monthly practice of showing up and holding space for everyone to be seen, heard, and cared for.

If you've spent energy editing yourself to feel safe, you deserve a space where the full version of you is supported. Not tolerated. Welcomed.

When you walk into a room, and no one looks like you, it's hard to believe that room was built with you in mind.

AANHPI communities deserve therapists who don't treat their culture as a footnote. Who understand that identity isn't one thing. Who don't ask you to translate your experience into something more digestible.

You don't have to be in crisis to deserve support.

Somewhere along the way, we learned that therapy is only for emergencies. That you have to earn the right to ask for help by hitting rock bottom first.

That's not how this works.

Therapy is for the stuck feeling. The low hum of anxiety you've normalized. The transition you can't quite navigate alone. The question you keep circling back to.

You don't have to justify needing support. You just have to show up.

I've heard all of them, and I've felt all of them, too. And depending on the year, the same day can mean something completely different.

Here's what I know from my own experience and from sitting with Adoptees in the therapy room: there is no single right way to feel about the day your life changed. Some of us celebrate. Some of us grieve. A lot of us do both before noon and then feel guilty about one or the other by dinner.

The hard part isn't the feeling. The hard part is being handed a narrative about your own life and being expected to perform gratitude or some other positive emotion on someone else's schedule. When the people around you treat adoption day like a celebration, and you're quietly sorting through what losses and gains brought you to where you are, it gets lonely fast. And when you try to name that, the world often has a way of making you feel like something is wrong with you for not being thankful enough.

Nothing is wrong with you.

Grief and gratitude have always coexisted. The problem was never your feelings. The problem was a story that didn't leave room for them.

If you're an Adoptee and this day is coming up on the calendar and your stomach already knows it, I see you. You get to feel whatever you feel about your own story. Nobody else gets to write that part for you.

Progress doesn't always look like progress. Some weeks you'll feel like you've taken three steps back, and that doesn't mean you've failed. It means you're doing the work.

Hard days aren't proof that therapy isn't working, rather they're often proof that it is.

Our hot take this Mental Health Awareness Month: You don't have to hit rock bottom to deserve support.

☑ Feeling stuck counts
☑ Being tired of your own (or lack of) coping mechanisms counts
☑ That thing you keep brushing off because other people have it worse? That counts too

You don't have to be in crisis to deserve a space where you can put it all down; you just have to be done pretending you're not carrying anything.

Asian Americans are three times less likely to seek mental health services than any other racial group in the United States. 3X. Sit with that number for a second.

The model minority myth is part of "the why." When the world tells an entire community that they've made it, that they're resilient, that they don't struggle the way other people do — it doesn't leave much room to say "actually, I'm not okay." The pedestal becomes the cage in which silence is the expectation.

Generational trauma doesn't disappear because someone got a degree, or built a business, or held it together for their family. Discrimination doesn't stop hurting because it gets dismissed as "not as bad," and mental health struggles aren't less real because you should be "fine."

If you grew up in a home or a culture where asking for help meant you were failing, I want you to hear this clearly: you were never failing. You were surviving a system that told you your pain wasn't real enough to deserve attention.

And the truth is this:
It is. And you do.

"Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together"

May is AANHPI Heritage Month, which recognizes the immense contributions, diverse cultures, and history of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in the United States. It honors their impact on American society, economy, and culture, while highlighting the community’s resilience against historical and ongoing discrimination.

AANHPI Heritage Month is also an invitation to listen. To the stories that don't get told. To the identities that don't fit into a single box. To the people who are still figuring out what heritage means when it was taken, given, or rebuilt from scratch.

These lanterns were painted by an artist within the Asian American diaspora and Adoptee community. She crafted each one differently, each one whole, and every one lit within. Their diversity creates belonging; not sameness, not proximity, their uniqueness is what makes them all belong...just like community.
