What an incredible day at the inaugural Crossroads Charity Classic benefiting the Parkinson's Foundation.

What started as an idea to give back to an organization that does so much for the populations we serve turned into a day filled with great golf (despite a bit of rain), new connections, and most importantly, funds raised to support ongoing research toward a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

Our website looks a bit different today...

For the last 14 years, Crossroads has helped families navigate the complexities of senior care. Today, we’re taking the next step in that mission.

We are incredibly excited to announce the launch of Crossroads Home Care Services, expanding our support for families by now providing in-home care alongside our existing eldercare advising services.

Implementing our own in-home care team allows us to deliver better health outcomes through a more connected approach to care — one where In-Home Caregivers and Eldercare Advisors work together to support families.

This is not a separate direction for our company. It is a natural evolution of our mission that allows us to provide an entirely new model of support here in West Michigan.

Every client receiving home care through Crossroads is supported not only by exceptional caregivers, but also by a dedicated Eldercare Advisor who remains involved throughout the aging journey.

14 years.

Yesterday marked 14 years of Crossroads serving families across West Michigan!

Since the beginning, our goal has been simple. To help families navigate senior care decisions with clarity, guidance, and support when it matters most.

Over the years, we have had the privilege of supporting thousands of families and partnering with incredible professionals throughout our community. We are grateful for the trust so many have placed in us and for the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of those we serve.

🧠 Myth Busting Monday: Care Decisions Beyond the Balance Sheet

🚫 Myth
"If we pay for care now, there will be nothing left later."

✅ Busted
This belief is often driven by fear, uncertainty, and unspoken concerns about inheritance. Many families worry that paying for care will quickly drain savings and leave nothing behind for the next generation. While that concern is understandable, it can unintentionally shift the focus away from the purpose of those resources. In reality, savings are meant to support safety, dignity, and quality of life. Using them intentionally for care is not wasteful. It is often exactly what they were built for. Most care journeys do not involve immediate or long term placement in the highest and most expensive level of care. Needs typically change gradually, allowing families to plan and adjust rather than spend reactively.

It is also important to distinguish between different types of care. Independent living, assisted living, memory care, and home based support are very different financially from skilled nursing care. Senior living communities are a social and supportive environment designed to maintain independence, while skilled nursing facilities are medical settings intended for the most complex and ongoing clinical needs. Assuming that all care leads quickly to a nursing home often creates unnecessary fear and delays helpful support earlier in the process.

🧠 Myth Busting Monday: Rethinking the Emotional Side of Aging at Home

“Home is always where emotional well being is best."

✅ Busted
For many older adults, home truly is a wonderful place to grow older. Familiar surroundings, personal routines, cherished memories, and the comfort of being in one’s own space can provide a strong sense of peace and security. With the right level of support, especially through home care services, many seniors are able to remain safely at home while maintaining independence and quality of life.

That said, emotional well being is influenced by much more than location alone. As care needs change, staying home can sometimes lead to increased loneliness, anxiety, frustration, and depression. Daily social interaction may decrease, mobility challenges can make it harder to leave the house, and family caregivers may feel overwhelmed trying to balance work, parenting, and caregiving responsibilities. In many situations, a supportive senior living community can actually improve emotional health by offering consistent care, built in social opportunities, structured activities, and a sense of belonging. Many families are surprised to see loved ones become more engaged, confident, and connected once they are no longer isolated or struggling at home.

🧠 Myth Busting Monday: Why Daily Walks Aren’t Enough to Keep Seniors Independent

🚫 Myth
“Walking is all older adults need to stay strong and independent.”

✅ Busted
Walking is excellent for cardiovascular health, circulation, and mental well-being, but it does very little to preserve the specific types of strength that keep seniors out of hospitals, off the floor, and living independently. As we age, we lose muscle mass and power, especially in the legs, hips, and core. This loss directly affects the ability to stand up from a chair, climb stairs, regain balance after a trip, and prevent a fall. Walking uses these muscles at a very low intensity, which means it is not enough to stop or reverse that decline. Research consistently shows that resistance training and balance training are what protect older adults from frailty. These activities tell the body to keep muscle tissue, strengthen bones, and maintain the neurological connections that control balance and reaction time. Walking alone does not provide that signal. In other words, walking keeps the heart healthy. Strength and balance training keep the body functional.

“Falls are just a normal part of getting older…they happen, and there’s not much you can do to prevent them.”

✅ Busted
Most falls are not random accidents. They usually have multiple, preventable causes. Medications can cause dizziness. Dehydration can lower blood pressure. Muscle weakness, vision changes, poor lighting, throw rugs, slippery floors, rushing to the bathroom at night, untreated balance problems, or lack of support can dramatically increase risk.A single fall can change everything. It can lead to hospitalization, loss of independence, reduced mobility, fear of falling again, and a decline in overall health. But the good news? With intentional planning, many falls can be prevented or significantly reduced.
