Actor Kevin Bacon spent Sunday volunteering at George Mason University with his nonprofit, http://SixDegrees.org, helping pack 35,000 meal kits for families in Fairfax County and assembling 500 mental health resource kits for students. Bacon said the organization’s mission is to strengthen community connections through grassroots nonprofits.

Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Fairfax County, http://SixDegrees.org focuses on addressing issues like food insecurity and mental health while encouraging people to support one another during increasingly divisive times.

Cyclosporiasis is the intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite cyclospora, and symptoms typically develop about two days to two weeks after exposure, including prolonged watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite and weight loss. Although the infection can be treated with a combination antibiotic, the illness can last weeks if left untreated and may lead to dehydration.

Those most at risk are young children, elderly individuals and immunosuppressed individuals.

When shopping for lettuce or other greens, experts recommend avoiding precut or packaged items and selecting whole, uncut produce instead, because it typically undergoes less handling.

Bagged salad mixes and kits have been specifically linked to previous cyclospora outbreaks in the United States and Canada, according to Michigan health officials.

Cases of diarrhea caused by the parasite cyclospora continue to climb, and with the threat of weekslong illness and no certainty about the source, it’s easy to wonder: Is there anything in the produce aisle that’s safe to eat?

Staying cool and safe in the Summer heat is important for everyone, but is especially critical for older adults and those with chronic conditions.

Note these Key Steps to Beat the Heat:

1. Hydrate correctly: Remember hydration is more than just fluids, it is electrolytes too! Sip hydrating liquids consistently throughout the day before you feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
2. Seek out the cool! Find cool spaces! If your home lacks A/C, go to a public library or local shopping mall. You can find nearby public cooling centers by calling 2-1-1.
3. Protect yourself if out and about: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) every two hours when outdoors. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing!
4. Watch for signs of Heat exhaustion as this causes heavy sweating, dizziness, and nausea.
Heatstroke is a medical emergency - symptoms are no sweating, confusion, and a high body temperature.

5. Keep pets safe too in the heat! Walk dogs early in the morning or late at night. Touch the pavement with your bare hand; if it is too hot for you, then is too hot for their paws!!!
