Back pain doesn’t always mean something is damaged.
One of the biggest misconceptions about low back pain is that pain automatically means there is a disc, joint, or other structure that is “worn out” or needs to be fixed.
For most people with low back pain, there isn’t one specific structure responsible for their symptoms. In fact, findings like disc bulges, arthritis, and degeneration are commonly seen on imaging—even in people who have no back pain at all.
That doesn’t mean your pain isn’t real. It means there is often more to the story.
Your strength, activity level, sleep, stress, previous experiences with pain, and your body's ability to tolerate the demands of everyday life can all play a role.
And that's actually good news.
For many people, the answer isn't avoiding movement or protecting their back forever. It's gradually rebuilding movement, strength, confidence, and capacity.
If you've been told your back is "worn out," don't assume that means you have to stop doing the things you enjoy.
We can help you understand what's happening and build a plan to get moving again.
