Today is World Su***de Prevention Day. It's worth saying plainly: DBT was built for this.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan for people whose pain felt unsurvivable — people other treatments had given up on. Decades later, it remains one of the best-studied treatments for reducing suicidal behavior, and the reason is not complicated: it teaches concrete skills for surviving the worst moments and then building a life you actually want to stay in.

That's the work we do at Front Range Treatment Center. Full-model DBT — individual therapy, skills group, and phone coaching between sessions — for adults, teens, children, and couples, delivered as Colorado's only DBT-Linehan Board Certified program.

If you're in crisis right now: call or text 988, any time, any day. You're not alone, and this feeling can change.

If you or someone you love needs more than a hotline — a program built for exactly this — reach out. We reply within one business day. → frtc.ltd/contact

You don't have to feel ready. You just have to be willing.

Most of us wait to feel ready before we take the hard step — the phone call, the conversation, the appointment. DBT flips that. Willingness isn't a feeling you wait for; it's a small, doable next step, taken anyway.

The skill is simple on paper: notice the part of you that's bracing (willfulness — arms crossed, "no"), and choose one open-handed action instead. Not everything. One thing.

Readiness usually shows up after you start, not before.

Can a 6-year-old do DBT? Yes — when it's built for them.

Most people meet DBT as a treatment for teens and adults. But the skills underneath it — noticing big feelings, riding them out without exploding, asking for help with words — are exactly the skills young kids are still building. Child DBT teaches them early, at the child's level.

What that looks like in practice:

• Skills taught through play, stories, and games — not worksheets and lectures
• Parents and caregivers learn the skills alongside their child, so home becomes part of the treatment
• Real DBT, adapted for young minds — the same evidence-based model, translated for how kids actually learn

If the start of the school year has brought bigger meltdowns, longer recoveries, or more battles than usual, that's not a character flaw — it's often a skills gap. And skills can be taught.

Ever notice how everything feels harder on five hours of sleep? DBT noticed too — and built a skill for it.

The PLEASE skill is the foundation of emotion regulation: taking care of your body so your emotions have less raw material to work with.

PL — Treat PhysicaL illness. See the doctor, take the medication, don't push through.
E — Balanced Eating. Regular meals; not too much, not too little.
A — Avoid mood-altering substances. Alcohol and drugs make emotions harder to read and regulate.
S — Balanced Sleep. Aim for a consistent amount that leaves you rested.
E — Get Exercise. Movement, most days — a walk counts.

None of this makes hard emotions disappear. It lowers your vulnerability to them, so the skills you use in the moment have a fighting chance. With September routines resetting, it's a good week to pick one letter and start there.

"Do you offer DBT?" Almost every therapy practice says yes. Here's the question we'd encourage you to ask instead: "Is your DBT program certified?"

DBT works best as a complete treatment — and the research behind it is based on the full model: individual therapy, a weekly skills group, between-session phone coaching, and a consultation team holding the clinicians to the model. When pieces get dropped, it isn't the same treatment the evidence supports.

That's what the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification exists to verify. DBT-LBC is the certifying body built on Dr. Marsha Linehan's work, and program certification means independent reviewers examined how a practice actually delivers DBT — not just what its website says.

Front Range Treatment Center in Greenwood Village is a DBT-LBC certified program — one of fewer than 30 in the country. It's the credential we'd want a family member to look for, which is why we went and earned it.

In DBT, the goal isn't just fewer bad days. Marsha Linehan, who developed DBT, named it plainly: the point of all of it is building a life worth living.

Not a perfect life. Not a life with no pain — pain shows up in every life. A life worth living means a life with things in it that matter to you: people, work, mornings you don't dread, moments you actually want to be present for.

And it isn't built all at once. It's built the way anything real is built — one skill used instead of an old pattern, one conversation handled differently, one repaired moment at a time. Some weeks the progress is invisible. It still counts.

If you're in the middle of the hard part right now: the hard part is part of the building.

"Is DBT the same as CBT?" We hear this one a lot — and it's a good question.

DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) actually grew out of CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). Both are evidence-based, skills-focused, and practical. But they're built for different jobs:

• CBT centers on changing unhelpful thought patterns — notice the thought, test it, reframe it.
• DBT was built for when emotions run too hot for reframing to work in the moment. It balances change skills WITH acceptance skills — mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
• CBT is often shorter-term and problem-specific. Full DBT is a comprehensive program: individual therapy, a skills group, and between-session phone coaching.
• If intense emotions, self-harm urges, or stormy relationships are the main struggle, the research points to DBT. If the main struggle is a specific pattern like a phobia or persistent negative thinking, CBT may be the better fit.

Neither is "better" — they're different tools. What matters is matching the tool to the problem, and getting the real version of whichever you choose.

Front Range Treatment Center in Greenwood Village is a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification certified program — one of fewer than 30 in the country — so the DBT you get here is the full-fidelity version the research is based on.

Ever notice you have two very different voices in your head?

One runs hot — all feeling, urgency, "do something NOW." DBT calls that emotion mind. The other runs cold — logic, lists, pros and cons, with the feelings switched off. That's reasonable mind.

Neither one is wrong. But neither one alone makes your best decisions.

Wise mind is where they overlap — the part of you that can feel the feeling AND see the facts at the same time. It's less a technique than a place you check in with. One way in: pause, take a slow breath, and ask yourself, "What do I know to be true here — not just what I feel, and not just what I think?" Then wait. The answer that comes with a sense of settledness, not urgency, is usually wise mind talking.

You've used it before — every time you've said "I knew in my gut that was right." DBT just teaches you how to find it on purpose.

New school year, big feelings — for a lot of teens, August is a lot.

New schedules, new social maps, harder classes, and a phone that never stops. For some teens, "a lot" tips into shutdowns, blowups, school avoidance, or friendships that feel like a minefield. That's exactly the territory DBT skills were built for.

At Front Range Treatment Center in Greenwood Village, teen DBT teaches practical, research-backed skills for real teen life:

• Mindfulness — noticing the spiral before it takes over
• Distress tolerance — getting through the big moment without making it worse
• Emotion regulation — turning the intensity down so feelings fit the situation
• Interpersonal effectiveness — asking for what you need and keeping friendships steady

We're a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification certified program — one of fewer than 30 in the country — which means teens get full-fidelity DBT: the real version the research is based on.

Your feelings make sense.

Not "they're convenient." Not "they're always proportionate." But they make sense — given what you've lived through, what today asked of you, and what you're carrying that nobody else can see.

In DBT, that's called validation, and it's not the same as approval. Validating a feeling doesn't mean the feeling gets to drive. It means you stop spending energy arguing with yourself about whether you're allowed to feel it — and put that energy into what you do next.

Try it once today. Instead of "I shouldn't feel this way," try: "It makes sense that I feel this way. Now — what do I need?"
