As Pride Month comes to a close, we’re reminded that everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and valued as they age. 🫶

Recent research by McKnight’s Senior Living found that older LGBTQ+ adults are much less likely than non-LGBTQ+ adults to feel confident they will receive the support they need as they grow older.

At Whitney Center, we believe belonging matters not only during Pride Month, but every day. We are proud to foster a community rooted in dignity, compassion, and connection.

In a quiet, cozy corner of Whitney Center, residents come together to weave creativity, connection, and skill into every thread. 🪡

About two years ago, resident Lucienne Coifman turned her passion for weaving into something greater and began our weaving class. Now, it has become a well-loved creative outlet where residents regularly gather to learn, share skills, and create beautiful pieces including scarves, towels, table runners, rugs, and much more.

Lucienne herself has extraordinary experience, weaving for about 42 years and teaching for nearly 36. She is also the author of "Rep, Rips, Reps", a book that expands beyond traditional weaving patterns and includes instructions for more than 20 original projects such as rugs, placemats, runners, wall hangings, and samplers.

When people think about AI, they don't always picture a room full of older adults eager to learn about it. Maybe they should.

At a recent Summer Speaker Series event, Whitney Center resident Herb Kolodny led a presentation on safe and practical ways to use AI in everyday life. The packed room and thoughtful discussion were a reminder that curiosity, learning, and innovation aren't defined by age.

Still thinking about this event! We loved being there to support The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven’s Annual Meeting at the historic Shubert Theatre.

What a powerful evening centered on community, the arts, and the work being done to bring people together across Greater New Haven. We’re always glad to support the important impact they’re making, and are grateful to be part of a community that shows up for each other like this. 🙌

What a great day at Hamden Fest!

Thank you to the Town of Hamden, Connecticut and Hamden Regional Chamber of Commerce for hosting us on such a beautiful day that was filled with energy, celebrating our community. 🙌

Our team members and residents enjoyed meeting members of the Hamden community, sharing more about who we are, and about all the great things that come with community living. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth. We enjoyed connecting with you!

Rowing Into New Adventures. 🚣

What started with resident Baxter Walsh and a shared love of rowing has grown into one of the community’s most active resident-led groups: the Whitney Center Rowing Team.

The team is made up of about 50 members, most of whom have never rowed before. Thanks to a partnership with the New Haven Rowing Club, which helped the team acquire new state-of-the-art rowing equipment, residents have embraced the sport with remarkable enthusiasm. Meeting twice each week, the team continues to thrive fueled by the energy, commitment, and sense of community rowing inspires.

Staying active, trying new things, and pursuing your passions happens at every age. 💪

This Pride Month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ members of our community and reaffirm our commitment to inclusion, dignity, and belonging for all. 🏳️‍🌈

This month is also a reminder that our Thrive at Home team has done great work with the LGBTQ+ community as proud members of the Connecticut Gay & Le***an Chamber, and holders of a platinum certification with Sage Care LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency Training. 🙌

🎨 Art and Legacy Come Alive on Main Street at Whitney Center 🖼️

Recently we welcomed our newest featured creators to our gallery to meet our community and share the stories behind their incredible work. We are so proud to showcase these amazing artists:

We are deeply honored to feature the vibrant paintings on hand-tooled leather by the late, award-winning Winfred Rembert Sr., alongside excellent pieces by his son Winfred Rembert Jr. and granddaughter Nima Rembert, all beautifully coordinated by his daughter-in-law, Tamu Rembert. The legacy behind the artwork from the Rembert family will inspire our community for the months to come.

We are also showcasing a number of extraordinary pieces by local artist Eric March, bringing many of his major works together for the first time. Eric features realistic figurative art that tells all kinds of stories of people.

All of these stunning collections have truly brought our Main Street gallery to life!

We also want to thank Hamden mayor Adam Sendroff for joining our community in celebrating the exhibition. 🙌

✨ Now, come see it for yourself! The exhibition is officially open for public viewing, and we encourage anyone to stop by and experience it.
