Sunnyside Retirement Community

Sunnyside Retirement Community Sunnyside is nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. The Sunnyside campus is situated in Harrisonburg, Virginia on just over 100 acres.

As a Life Plan Community, we offer a full continuum of care—including independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing—providing peace of mind for the future. Homes have the breathtaking backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains and a direct view of Massanutten Peak. Sparkling ponds, gently rolling hills and beautiful gardens make Sunnyside a "little slice of heaven" for those who reside there.

Today is International Day of Charity. It is a meaningful reminder of the difference generosity can make in the lives of others.

At Sunnyside, that spirit of giving is at the heart of our Fellowship Fund. Through the generosity of residents, families, team members, and friends, Fellowship provides financial assistance to eligible residents who, through no fault of their own, have outlived their financial resources.

It is more than financial support. It is peace of mind, security, and the reassurance that Sunnyside can continue to be home.

If you are looking for a meaningful way to recognize International Day of Charity, we invite you to consider supporting the Fellowship Fund. Every gift, no matter the size, helps us continue a tradition of caring for one another that is at the heart of who we are. 💙

Chris has spent 91 years carrying one world into another. She was born in Japan in 1935, long before anyone could have imagined the shape her life would eventually take. She would become an interpreter and coordinator, a liaison between governments and television crews, a world traveler, a mother, a wife, and, almost accidentally, a witness to some of history's defining moments. She would help filmmakers negotiate access to the White House, spend weeks living among wildlife in Botswana, work alongside scientists studying language in chimpanzees, and build a life in America without ever leaving Japan behind.

Yet listening to her speak, one quickly notices something unusual. She tells none of it as though it were extraordinary. History arrives in her stories with the same measured cadence as a neighbor dropping by for coffee.

💡 Did you know?

James Madison University has been part of the Harrisonburg community for more than a century, but it has not always been JMU!

The university opened its doors in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women, created to prepare women for careers as teachers. It later became Madison College in 1938 before officially becoming James Madison University in 1977. 💜💛

Today, JMU is such an important part of Harrisonburg and just one of the many things that makes our corner of the Shenandoah Valley such a special place to call home.

Any JMU alumni or fans in our Sunnyside

It is a beautiful first day of September here at Sunnyside, and the sunshine is giving us a great view of all the progress happening in our newly updated dining areas!

Construction is moving right along, and we cannot wait to share more as these spaces continue to take shape.

Today, we’re remembering the one and only Dolly Parton in our Health Care Center. ❤️

Residents and team members are celebrating Dolly’s incredible life and legacy with tacos and banana pudding, two of her favorites, while her music fills the halls all day long.

A little good food, a whole lot of great music and plenty of memories as we celebrate a true legend who brought so much joy to so many. 💕🎶

Being sure to get her 6,000 steps in every day since 1999, the first floor halls of The Highlands have been walked by longtime resident Marvel Dunn. Dunn, along with her husband Martin, known as “the M & M’s,” moved to Sunnyside from Bradenton, FL, 27 years ago. Martin had just undergone his fifth bypass surgery, and they wanted to move closer to their family.

When choosing their new home, the Dunns decided on an apartment in the Highlands rather than a cottage. They moved into their one bedroom apartment and never looked back.

💡 Did you know?

You do not have to travel far to explore some incredible history. Harrisonburg has its very own History Trail!

The Harrisonburg History Trail connects historic homes, museums, battlefields, cemeteries, monuments, and other significant sites throughout Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, offering a glimpse into the people, places, and events that helped shape our area.

It is just one more reason we love calling the Shenandoah Valley home. 💙

Have you visited any of the stops along the trail?

🐾 Happy National Dog Lover Day! 🐾

At Sunnyside, we know home just would not be home without our four legged family members. That is why our campus includes a dog park where residents and their pups can get outside, stretch their legs, play, and spend a little time with their fellow furry neighbors. 🐶💙

Because when we say Sunnyside is a community for the whole family, we mean it!

Walk into Gail Fisher’s cottage at Sunnyside and bluebirds are everywhere. Bluebirds on the wall. Bluebirds on the shelves. Bluebirds perched on the welcome sign beside the door. It feels less like decorating and more like a thesis statement.
