A brief history into National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
1974.
After undergoing a mastectomy, First Lady Betty Ford spoke openly to the media about her breast cancer diagnosis. At a time when discussing cancer publicly was largely taboo, her transparency transformed public conversation, leading to a massive surge in women seeking screenings. This would soon be called the "Betty Ford Effect"
1982.
Nancy G. Brinker founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in honor of her sister, who died of breast cancer at age 36. The organization launched the first "Race for the Cure" in 1983, establishing a grassroots fundraising model that popularized the use of pink in health advocacy.
1985.
The American Cancer Society partnered with Imperial Chemical Industries (a pharmaceutical company producing tamoxifen) to establish the first National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The initial goal was to normalize routine screening and educate the public on the life-saving benefits of early mammography.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you or anyone you know has any questions or concerns, please reach out to a trusted medical professional.
