Charlotte was hospitalized with septic shock and required substantial oxygen support.

AT ADMISSION: Charlotte experienced septic shock from a urinary tract infection, acute hypoxic respiratory failure and acute kidney injury. Underlying COPD further impaired her breathing. She required AirVO high-flow oxygen and was unable to reduce her oxygen support before transferring to Kindred.

TREATMENT AT KINDRED: At Kindred Hospital Philadelphia – Havertown, Charlotte received respiratory therapy, wound care, nutritional support and physical and occupational therapy. Although she periodically required 100% oxygen, the team helped gradually reduce her support to 6 liters. She also progressed to sitting upright and getting out of bed into a chair.

OUTCOME: After 56 days of treatment, Charlotte was discharged to her previous nursing home. She looked forward to spending time with her friends again. “My experience was great.”

Donald suffered a fall with a subarachnoid hemorrhage (a type of stroke that can be life-threatening) and hypoxia (lack of oxygen to your organs). He was intubated and later transferred to Kindred Hospital Philadelphia – Havertown for specialized care and rehabilitation.

Over his 31-day stay at Kindred, Donald received respiratory therapy, wound care, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy. To protect him from falling out of bed, Kindred placed Donald in a Posey Enclosure Bed, which features a canopy. Therapy helped Donald make steady progress. As days passed, Donald became more aware of his surroundings and was able to feed himself, walk with a walker, and sit out of bed most of the day.

Donald’s partner, who visited all day, every day, said Donald’s care was fabulous, mentioning caregivers Mabel and Ashley and his case worker, Jennifer, for their support.

Donald was discharged from Kindred and progressed to a brain injury acute rehabilitation unit to continue his recovery.

Angela was severely injured in a motorcycle accident, suffering facial and skull fractures, a subarachnoid hemorrhage (brain bleed), and a hemopneumothorax (serious collection of blood and air between the lungs and chest wall). As a result, Angela experienced respiratory failure, requiring a tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation to breathe.

Angela transferred from a traditional hospital to Kindred Hospital Philadelphia – Havertown for specialized acute care and rehabilitation. When she arrived at Kindred, Angela was very confused due to her injuries, and she wouldn’t work with her caregivers. However, as the days and weeks went by, she learned the staff was there to help, and she went from one extreme to the other – hugging and complimenting them and engaging with them in her therapy.

Kindred’s respiratory therapy team helped wean her from the ventilator, and she was successfully decannulated.

Angela, who also broke her collarbone and leg during her accident, benefited from physical, occupational, and speech therapy at Kindred, and she gained the ability to walk with a walker.

“It was a little rocky in the beginning because I didn’t know what happened to me, so I was frustrated. But the staff were caring and remarkable with me. Chandra was phenomenal!”

Thanks to her dedication and the support of her care team, Angela was able to be discharged from Kindred and return home, achieving her goal of being well enough to attend her daughter’s graduation.
