Under Section 3721.13 of the Ohio Revised Code, individuals living in nursing homes and assisted living communities have protected Resident Rights.

🎉 Today we're highlighting Resident Right #23: the right, upon reasonable request, to have their room door closed and to have others knock before entering. The only exceptions are during an emergency or if it is not medically advisable, as documented in the resident's medical record by their attending physician.

This right helps protect a resident's privacy, dignity, and personal space. Having a private environment allows residents to feel more comfortable, respected, and in control of their daily lives.

Residents have the right to make choices about their daily routines and personal preferences whenever possible. Person-centered care means honoring the individual, not expecting everyone to follow the same schedule or preferences.

🎉 Today we're highlighting Resident Right #22: the right to privacy during visits with a spouse. If both spouses are residents of the same home, they also have the right to share a room within the home's capacity, unless it is not medically advisable as documented by the attending physician.

This right recognizes the importance of maintaining close personal relationships and preserving family connections, even while living in a long-term care setting. Residents do not lose the comfort, companionship, and privacy that come with their marital relationship.

🎉 Today we're highlighting Resident Right #21: the right, upon reasonable request, to private and unrestricted communication with family members, social workers, and other individuals. This includes the right to send and receive unopened mail, have reasonable access to a telephone for private conversations, and receive private visitors at reasonable hours. Communication with public officials, long-term care ombudsman, attorneys, and physicians cannot be restricted.

This right helps ensure that residents can stay connected with the people who matter most, maintain important relationships, and advocate for their own needs and interests.
