Aging well in Homer takes more than one service.

A ride to an appointment. A hot meal. A safe place to live. A familiar face. Help finding resources. A chance to get out, stay active and remain connected to the community.

On paper, these services are often funded and measured separately. In real life, they are deeply connected.

A missed ride can mean a missed medical appointment. Transportation can determine whether someone is able to join others for lunch. A meal can also be a wellness check, a social connection, or the moment someone learns about another resource they need.

Across the aging-services field, there is growing recognition that supporting older adults means looking at the whole picture—not just individual programs.

That is something we see here in Homer every day.

When nutrition, transportation, housing, health, activities and community support work together, they help make something much bigger possible: independence, connection and the ability to age well in the community we call home.

That bigger picture matters — and it is one worth continuing to talk about.

The event is free and open to everyone. No registration is required.

💛 GRANDPARENTS DAY IS THIS SUNDAY

National Grandparents Day is September 13, a day to celebrate the grandparents who help shape our families, share our histories, and strengthen our communities.

For many families, grandparents are also raising the next generation.

Did you know?

• About 1 in 8 Alaska children are being raised in households headed by grandparents or other extended family members.

• Nationally, American Indian and Alaska Native grandparents are the most likely to be responsible for their grandchildren. Among grandparents living with grandchildren, 39.2% are responsible for their care.

• About 90% of kinship families are outside the state foster care system. That means many grandparents and relatives raising children do so without the stipends, caseworkers, Medicaid benefits, and other supports available through formal foster care.

This Grandparents Day, we celebrate grandparents in every role: storytellers, teachers, caregivers, advocates, and the steady hands helping hold generations together.

If a grandparent helped raise you, taught you something you still carry, or simply made the world feel a little more like home, take a moment this Sunday to tell them. 💛

Thinking about trying a class at Homer Senior Center? Here’s what to know:

• Classes are open to the public.
• Your first class is free.
• Classes are led by volunteer instructors or leaders familiar with the course and its movements.
• Exercises are geared toward specific fitness goals and can be approached at your own pace.
• Fitness Pass punch cards will be available at the beginning of class.
• Cash and checks are accepted.

Come as you are, try a class and find the kind of movement that works for you.

Strong balance begins at the center.

Core Balance combines deep-core strengthening with exercises that support stability, posture and functional mobility — the movements we rely on every day to stand, walk, reach and move with confidence.

The class is suitable for a range of fitness levels, and exercises are organized around clear, practical goals.

Join us Wednesday September 16th at 11am and try your first class free.
